Letters Patent A' 106,502, dated 'August 16, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-@RATES The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the a'ame.
To all 107mm 'it muy concern Be it known that I, Mniunr'r PECKHAM, of Utic'a, in the county of Oneida and State of N ew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Gratos; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, sutcicnt to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains tofully understand and construct the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which makes part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan or top view of my .improved grate.
Figure 2 is a sectional end view in line :c x, iig. 1.
Figures 3, 4, 'and 5 show different forms of the cleaners and detached views.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several iigures.
The nature of my invention consists in cleaningdisks, having either a' smooth, serrated, on" toothed periphery hung between grate-bars on a shaft, with which they revolve, but on which .they slide freely laterally. Also, in lugs formed on the grate-bars, so as to limit the lateral motion of the cleaningdisks.
A in the drawings represents the grate, the bars B of which are sufliciently apart from each other to allow of cleaning-disks, G, to be placed between them, which disks, when notrevolved but stationary, act as gratebars.
lhese disks Cvslide laterally upon a square shaft, D, which revolves in suitable bearings at the under side of the ends of the grate.
The disks C may be smallerv or larger, and their perphery may-be either smooth, serrated, or toothed, and their shape may be either round or oblong, as may be required under diiilrent circumstances.'
In revolving the shaft, the disksiirevolve between ,the grate-bars, and force down into the ash-pit all ashes and cinders, and, when large pieces'of einders have to pass through, the disks will move laterally, and'allow the large pieces to drop through.
To' prevent too much of a. lateral movement of the disks, l provide lugs .E, formed on each side of the ings, though allowing a free movement of the disks,
as shown in dotted lines in fig. 1, still limit suoli movement to a sniicient degree.
The advantage of this arrangement of disks loosely on the shaft will be clearly understood without further explanation.-
Having thus described my invention,
iVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 11s-- 1. The cleaning-disks C, having either a smooth, serrated, or toothed periphery, hung between the bars of a re-grate, on a shaft, with which they revolve, but on which they laterally slide freely, substantially as herein described.
2. The combination of the above with thelugs E arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
' MER-RICHT JPECKHAM.
