JOHN J. SOMMER, OF NORTH ATTLEB ORO, MASSACHUSETTS.
CHAIN JEWELRY.
To all whom it may concern: I,
Be it known that I, J OIIN J. SOMMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of North Attleboro, countyof Bristol, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chain Jewelry, of which the following'is a specification.
My invention relates to'jewelry known to the trade as book-link chains, and consists in the specific construction and arrangement of parts described and claimed, whereby a strong link having the appear ance of solidityis formed from sheet metal or flat stock, and whereby thewhole chain is rendered substantial an'd complete in appearance and finish as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is an elevation of one side of several links of my' improved chain, the parts being shown on a scale approximately two-thirds larger than is customary in the trades; Fig. 2, is an edge-view of the same; Fig. 3, an elevation of the sideof the links opposite to that shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 4, is a view of the outer side of a linlnblank shown on a scale approximately three-fourths larger than in ordinary practice; Fig. '5, is a view of the inner side of said link blank; Fig. 6, a central longitudinal section of two links, one coupled to the other; Fig. 7, a transverse section of a link, taken upon plane of line 7-7 Fig. 6.
Asordinarily made these chains are comparatively small in size, and are enlarged in the drawings forming'part of this specification for convenience of illustration. Each link is made of a blank stamped out of flat-stock, the shape-of the blank being clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5. At one ex-.
' tremity the blank B, is formed with the female coupling tongue f, having the eyelet I hole f, and at the otherextremity the blank isformed with the male coupling tongue 0, adapted to enter the eyelet f, as shown in Fig; 6. Medially the blank is formed with the transverse openings a, a, on either side of the portion of the blank which constitutes the coupling bar 7). The edges of the Specification of Letters Patent. blank-adjacent to'the bar I), and openings a, a, are recessed as at e, e, to facilitate the bending and doubling over of the blank upon itself as shown more particularly in Figs. 6 and 7. The longitudinal edges of the blank are upset to form inturned flanges 2', z, the opposed edges of which contact with each otherwhen the blank is bent doubl'eas above stated, and as clearly shown in Fig. 7,
of the drawings. These side flanges, which may be slightly flared or beveled as related ent in the actual size of chain than in the accompanying drawings .which obviously and necessarily render intermediate spaces more apparent than they really are in actual size of chain. Fig. 2, gives a fair representation of the result attained in this respect, although the' coupling means are much more ctmspicuous than in reality.
The method of coupling the links together 'is shown in Fig. 6,the female tongue f, be-
ing passed through the holes a, a, and around the coupling bar 6, of the preceding link blank, and into the space between the' broad fiat sides 3, of the link, the coupling tongue 0, being then inserted through the eyelet f", and bent 'over the end of the tongue f, thereby efiectually and permanently coupling the parts together in such manner as to admit of necessary articulation between links. 1
The contacting edges of the inturned side flanges 2', i, may besoldered together or otherwise unitecl, and the usual finish resorted to, concealing the joints, and imparting an appearance of solidity and symmetry of structure that adds materially to the at tractiveness and value of the chain, while materially strengthening and reinforcing the same.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
A chitin of theoharacter designated, comprising a series of links articularly connected, each link consisting of a blank of sheet metal formed with a coupling bar and openings adjacent thereto, with interlocking tongues for coupling with a preceding link, and with inturned longitudinal edge flanges contacting with each other inthe 10 lVitnesser- JAMES E. To'r'rEN, i EDMUND T. SUMMER.
