Letters Patent No. 196,492, dated-August 16, 187 0.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred tb .in these Letters Patent and maisng p axt of the same Be it known that I, JOHN L. LA ROSE, of Leavenworth, in the"county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Vlasher for Cleansing and Securing Wearing Apparel, Washing Bed and Table-Linen,` Ste.; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being 4had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this speciication, in which- FigureV 1 represents angendsectional view of the frame, suds, and rinsing-box, the revolving clothescylinder with the portion opened, showing the apertures in the end ofthe cylinder, the form and position `of the slats which-cover the cylinder.
Figure 2 shows a side view section through the same, with the journals, crank-coupling, and stuingbox.
Figure?. is an enlarged view of the open sec-tion of the washing-cylinder. f p
Figure 4 shows detached views, infperspective, of tbe stnliin'g-box, and the clutch orfcrank-coupling, with the cylinder'. g K l Figure 5 shows a small perspective view of the machine with the cover removed.
My invention relates to a class that, perhaps, of all othlershas been pnt in almost every conceivable form; an"
It consists in the construction of the'washing-'cylinder, with its angularbeveled openings `through the heads orends of the cylinder, andthe peculiar shape and position the slats are put onforcovering .the cylinder, so that,by revolving it in one direction, the suds and rinsing-water will be drawn in byV the slats through the clothes, and pass out at the apertures in the ends; and byrrevolving the cylinder in the reverse direction, rthe cylinder is mostly emptied of the water,
carrying with it the impurities separated from t-he clothes to be drawn off; and, incombination therewith, the doveta'iled coupling-box, for connecting and .disconnecting the cylinder from the crank. and sudsbox.
General Description. The suds-box A is constructed inthe usual manner, with a curved sheet-metal bottom, B, it being supported on legs b b, whichare secured to the frame of the box by the boit-rods a d, which hold and clamp the box together.
The revolving cylinder O is so constructed that the clothes or articlesto be cleansed are put inside, a por-l tion ofthe cylinder O being hinged -for the purpose of opening into it. i
' The two heads. c c are provided with oblong square apertures, d d, cut in rectangular positions from the center, the apertures in both heads being beveled in one direction, so that the water will easily pass out when rotated in one direction, and in when themotion is reversed. The slats e'e e `e,`.with which the cylinder is covered, are peculiarly formed, the inner and outer edges being brought nearly to anedge, and the sides rounded over, from the opposite corners, so as to make the form similar to the blade ofvan oar, by which means the Water is conveyed int-o the cylinder, and. the air is mixedwith it, aud-'forced throughthe clothes as they one direction, and the water isy nearly all excluded from the-cylinder and clothes when turned in the opposite direction, thus rinsingi and throwing out the dirt to be drawn off from the suds-box A at the spigot g.
'ihecrank D is permanently connected with the suds-box by the stuffing-box E,'and is provided on 'the inside with a dovet-ail clutch, F, which forms a coupling with the revolving washing and rinsing-cy1 inder', by the sliding'in of the counter-piece plate f, which is secured cent-rally on the outside of one oi the cylinder-heads c. y
The other head c is providedwith ajournal, 71., and journal-box k, open atthe top, so that the cylinder can easily be taken out of the box A and replaced at pleasure.
vVlhat I claim as my invention is- 1. A washing and rinsing-cylinder, with angular' beveled oblong apertures, dd, through the heads cc, as arranged in combination withthe oval or oar-shaped -covering slats e e e e, operating in the manner as and for the purposes-described.
2. In combination with the above, the dovetail coupling F f, the stuffing-box E, and crank D, as
herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name in the presence of- J OHNJJ. LA ROSE.
Witnesses z E E. HENRY,
T. P. GARRETI.
are tumbled and chali'ed by revolving the cylinder in.
