p Be it known that We, DARIUs S. TYLER and LAMBERT D. TYLER, citizens of the United States, residing` at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention is an improvement in Washing-machines, and has for an object to provide a novel construction and combination of parts whereby to thoroughly and easily cleanse the clothing and to provide for Yturning the clothing during the washingoperation, aswell as means for securing the wringer so the same can be quickly turned into and out of position for use; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as willbe hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of a machine embodying our invention. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the machine. Fig. 4 isa detail view of the turning frame. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the boxings to fit on the wrists of the cranks. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the pounderheads, and Fig. 7 is a detail view of the wringer-bar.

In carrying out our invention we provide a body A in the form of a suds-box having a rounded bottom A' and preferably including a wooden box or casing and a lining of sheet metal, so the warping ot' the casing will not cause any leakage of the suds-box, the casing having its bottom A' curved so the turning frame can readily operate alongside the same in operation, as Will be best understood from Fig. 3. The turning frame B is a rectangular open frame having side bars B' and end bars B2, the latter being pivoted at h2 to the ends of the sudsbox and one of the pivots b2 being preferably extended, as shown in Figs. l and 2, and provided with a crank-handle b', as shown in said figures. This extension and crank handle may be preferred, because thereby the frame can be readily turned Without opening the lid of the box A. Y The box A has a lid C, which is slotted at C' for the play of the pounders, and upon the lid are mounted brackets D, provided at D' with bearings for the drive-shaft E. This drive-shaft is pro- 7o vided with the oppositely-projectiug cranks E,whose wrists are connected-with the pound ers, and the said shaft is provided at one end with the wheel F, preferably formed by extending the rod from which the shaftE is which encircles the block H and has its ends lapped together and secured by rivets or otherwise,`as shown at I' in Figs. 3 and 5. with a set-screw 7a', which operates to secure the pounder-rod L, so the said rod will be secured near its upper end by the screw J and near its lower end by the screw 7a'. Thus if either screw should become loosened the pounder-rod will be held by the other, and both screws can be loosened whenever it is desired to adjust the pounder-rod up or down, according to the bulk of clothing to be washed or for any other purpose desired. The pounder-rods L support the pounder-heads L' at their lower ends, the heads operating upon the clothing and serving by suction and compression to not only mechanically pound the clothing, but aid in cleaning the same by forcing the water to circulate through the clothes as may be desired.

The pounders are carried by the lid C and the swinging guide-rods K', and the lid C is hinged at C2, so it can be turned from the closed position shown in full lines, Fig. 3, to the open position indicated in dotted lines in In the dotted-line adjustment the swinging guide-rods K' turn up and stand against the rear side of the suds-boX A and operate to secure the lid and pounder in the dotted-line position shown in Fig. 3.

It will be noticed that the turning frame B may be rocked when the pounders are within the suds-box and can be turned entirely over when the pounders are adjusted to the dotted-line position shown in Fig. 3. On one end of the boX we secure a cleat M', arranged below the upper edge of the box and provided with a pivoted button M4, which may be turned into line with the cleat M or to the upright position indicated in full lines, Fig. 2, to secure the wringer-supporting bar M when the latter is adj usted to a vertical position. The bar M is pivoted at its ends at N', so it can be turned vertically to support the wringer in operative position, as Will be understood from Fig. 2, or horizontally, as shown in Fig. 1, when it is desired to throw the wringer out of the way when it is not in use. When the wringer is turned to operative position, the button M4 secures it firmly in such position, so it can be readily operated.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by-Letters Patent, is-

1. The machine herein described, comprising the ends-box having a curved bottom, the turning frame pivoted at its ends within said suds-box and open at its center for the operation of the pounders and arranged to be oscillatedwithin the suds-box when the pounders are in operative positionthe lid provided with bearings for the'operating-shaft, the operating-shaft having cranks, the boXings secured to said cranks and having guide-openings for the pounder-rods and clamps for securing the pounder-rods in dierent adjustments, the swinging guide-rods pivoted at one end within the suds-box and provided at `their swinging ends with means for clamping said pounder-rods, connections between said clamping means and the boxing on the cranks of the operating-shafts, and the pounders, and their rods secured in the boxing and the clamping means, and movable with the lid to a position Where they will not interfere with the revolution of the turning frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination ofthe suds-box, the operating-shaft having cranks, the boXings secured on said cranks and composed of blocks and straps inclosing the said blocks, said boX- ings being provided with openings for the wrists of the cranks and for the pounderrods, and the clamping-screws, the swinging guide-rods pivoted at one end to the sudsbox and connected at their swinging ends with the pounder-rods, the pounder-rods and the pounders, substantially as set forth.
