WOOD PLANING AND DRESSING MACHINE.
Application filed. November 7, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMANN TEGTMEYER, of Wennigsem on-the-Deister, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Wood Planing and Dressing Machines, of which the following is a speci fication.
This invention relates to a novel wood planing and dressing machine and more particularly to an improved construction of the cutter box that permits the free escape of the chips, and the ready sharpening of the cutting blade.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wood planing and dressing machine embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section of the cutter box.
The machine. comprises a frame 1 in which are mounted the bed rollers for feeding the work past the cutter. The bed rollers in front of the cutter are designated 3, and those behind the cutter are designated 2. Mounted in the frame 1 is an axle t which forms the pivot for tipping back the upper frame 5, arranged between the rollers 2 and 3- is the cutter box 8, which is provided with a cavity 9 for the shavings in front of a block 10. The rear end of the latter forms an inclined surface against which the adjustable cutter 11 is held by screws 12 and nuts 18. The screws 12 pass through slots in the cutter, and adjustment of the latter is effected by means of a screw spindle 14 which is screwed into a pendent arm 15 of the box 8. The top surface of the blade is covered by a lid or cover 16 which is fixed to lateral arms 18 pivoted to the box at 17. The top of the lid lies flush with the top 20 of the box 8, and with the tops of the lower rollers, except at the part 21 at which the edge of the cutter projects. In its closed position the lid 16 rests on the arm 15.
The frame 22, containing the upper series of feed rollers 23 is supported on screw spindles 6 which engage tapped holes in the frame 22 and are disposed at each of the four corners of the frame. These spindles carry sprockets which are connected to each other by a chain 7. One of the spindles 6 is provided with a crank handle 80, so that by turning the latter the frame 22 can be raised and lowered in the upper frame 5. The shaft 24: of the last roller 3 carries a link 25 which is pivoted at 28 to another 1 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 17, 1913.
Serial No. 230,056.
link 26, connected to the shaft 27 of the first roller 23. Mounted on the pivot 28 is a toothed wheel 29 which meshes with a toothed wheel 30 mounted on the shaft 24:.-
The drive is transmitted from the shaft 28 to the shaft 27 by the chain 31, and the shaft 27 of the first roller 28 drives the other rollers 23 by means of bevel gears (not shown). The drive is transmitted from the shaft 2% to the rollers 2 and 8 in the lower frame by bevel gearing (not shown). The lower frame also carries the polishing drum 3%, disposed between the rollers 2 and a roller 2 mounted in a pendent part of the upper frame When the frame 5 is raised for the purpose of exposing the cutter 11, the polishing drum 3& is likewise exposed and can be supplied with fresh polishing material.
The drum 3 1 and roller 2 are driven by toothed wheels 35, 36, 37 0E the shaft 38 of the last roller 2. The diameter of the polishing drum being greater than that of the rollers 2, 2*, its peripheral speed is greater than that of these rollers, and it rotates in the opposite direction to the latter. The polishing drum 3 1 is vertically adjustable by means of a hand-wheel 39, spindle 40 and worm gear 11.
The upper frame 5, together with the frame 22, can be tipped up about the pivot a, after unfastening screws. By thus lifting the frame 22 the two links 25 and 26 are drawn into alinement with each other and serve to take the weight of the raised frame.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is A device of the character described, comprising a cutter box, a cutter, a supporting block for said cutter fixed in said box and having an inclined surface whereby the edge of the cutter is supported over a cavity in the box, and a cover for said outter having arms pivoted to said box, the top surface of said box and cover being flush with each other.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
" HERMANN TEGTMEYER.
