JOSEPH C. HANCOCK, 0F NACOGDOCI-IES, TEXAFS.
EGGTESTER.
Application filed September 6, 1912.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH 0. Hancock, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nacogdoches, in the county of Nacogdoches and State of Texas, have iiwented new and useful Improvements in Egg-Testers, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of this invention is the provision of an egg testing device which is designed for the purpose of obviating the necessity of candling the eggs in a darkened room, which process has many disadvantages, said device being constructed so that an egg or eggs may be placed therein from one side, tested, and removed through the other side thereof and placed into acrate, thus making room for other eggs and facilitating the operation of testing.
In carrying out the object of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are susceptible to changes in details and structural. arrangen'ients, one preferred and practical embodiment being shown in the accompanying drawing, where in Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section view therethrough. Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof with the cover removed.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like reference characters designate similar parts, it will be seen that the invention comprises a casing generally designated by a and consisting of a bottom 5, side walls 6 and front and rear end walls 7 and 8 respectively and a cover 9.
The side walls 6 are provided intermediate the ends thereof with oppositely disposed vertically arranged angular grooves 10 which, in conjunction with a transverse groove 11 formed in the bottom 5 of the casing, are adapted to receive a supporting partition 12 therein whereby the same is maintained in an upright position. In order to further retain the partition 12 in its position, the same provided at its top with laterally extending flanges 13 which are adapted to engage the side walls 6 and be secured thereto by means of suitable fasteners 14. The base of the partition 12 is also provided with a laterally extending base flange 15 which is coextensive with the width of said partition and which is secured to the bottom 5 by means of fas- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 10, 1913.
Serial No. 718,969.
teners 16. The partition 12 is angular shaped to correspond with the grooves 10 and is provided medially of its ends with an inclined supporting portion 17 having a plurality of openings 18 therein, the walls of which are beveled for the reception of eggs whereby the latter are supported in said partition when being tested.
The rear end wall 8 of the casing 64 is provided with a door opening 19 which is closed by means of a door 20. The purpose of this door is to permit of the insertion of the artificial light 21 into the rear of the casing a and adjacent the partition 12 and in the event that an oil lamp is used, the top 9 of the casing is provided with a flue openin 22 which will permit of the escape of any smoke which might accumulate in the casing thus permitting the operator to tl'ioroughly test the The top 9 of the casing is provided adjacent the front end thereof with a sight opening 23 through which the operator may clearly see the eggs which are supported by the partition 12.
The side walls 6 of the casing (a are provided adjacent the front ends thereof with the openings 24: which are adapted to be normally closed by means of the doors 25 which are retained in their closing position by means of spring hinges 26 whereby any light will be prevented from entering the casing when an egg is being tested.
In use, the casing a is placed upon a suitable support, such as a table, and eggs are taken from a crate to be tested and passed through one of the door openings 2 1 and mounted in the partition 17 after which the operator may thoroughly test the same. After the egg or eggs are tested. the same are removed through the other door opening 2 1 and at the same time new eggs to be tested may be inserted through the first mentioned door and placed upon the partition.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that the invention contemplates providing an egg tester which is simple in construction thus reducing the cost of manufacture of the same to a minimum and which is effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
What is claimed is z- A device of the class described comprising a casing consisting of a bottom, side and end walls, a top having a sight opening therein said bottom and side walls bein normall olosin said 0 enin and an 1 b provlded With comn'mmozrtmg grooves, a illuminating device mounted 1n said casing. 10
