Be it known thatI I, Jol-iN Fons/r, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at -lVest Roxbury, Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Penholders, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to stationery, more particularly to writing materials, and has for an object to provide a pen holder whereby the pen nib can be easily attached thereto or as readily removed therefrom.

The invention contemplates, among other features, a pen holder whereby the handle of the holder together with suitable springlile members normally secure the nib to the holder, the nib being received in a collar having a portion of the handle extending therein so that when the handle is removed from the collar-,the spring-like members will be released so that the nib will gravitate from the collar, thus obviating the necessity of manually removing the nib from the collar and which, particularly when the nib is covered with ink, is a disagreeable task.

In the further disclosure Vof the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:

Figure l is a vert-ical longitudinal .sectional view of the pen holder, showing a nib secured therein; Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing` the handle of the holder removed from the collar, with the nib removed from the collar; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. l; and Fig. l is an end view.

Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a pen holder l0 including a collar l1 and a handle 12 provided with a reduced end 13 adapted for insertion in the collar Il. A plurality of spring-like clamping members 14 have their inner ends secured to the inner end of the collar and lying within the same, the said spring-like members being l semi-circular in cross section, with the front ends of the members normally tending to engage, as shown in Fig. 2.

Now when it is desired to secure a nib 15 to t-he pen holder 10, the nib is inserted in the front end of the collar Il, after which the handle l2 is engaged with the collar Il, thus causing the reduced end 13 to engage the spring-like clamping members lai and press the forward ends thereof toward the wall of the collar, thus clamping the inner end of the nib between the wall of the collar and one of the spring-like clamping members. Then it is desired to remove the nib without touching the same, it is simply necessary to remove the handle l2 from the collar 11, thus permitting the spring-like clamping members to return to normal position and out of clamping position, thus releasing the nib which will gravitate from the collar and become entirely disengaged therefrom.

It will be readily apparent that the collar and handle can be constructed of rubber, wood or metal and that the article including the spring-like clamping members can be cheaply and durably manufactured at small cost. It will be further apparent that when the spring-like clamping members are in clamping position the nib will be securely held in the collar by one of the members, and which force the nib against the wall of the collar. It will be further apparent that only one of the spring-like clamping members is necessary, although two are preferably employed so that the nib can be inserted in the collar to be engaged by either one of the clamping members or the other.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

l. As a new article of manufacture, a pen holder comprising a collar, a plurality of curved spring-like members having their inner ends secured to the inner end of the collar and their forward ends normally in engagement, and a handle adapted to be inserted in the inner' end of the collar to engage the spring-like clamping members and move the same toward the wall of the collar to clamp a nib between one of the members and the wall of the collar.

2. In a pen holder, the combination with a collar, of spring-like clamping members supported therein, with the forward ends thereof normally spaced from the wall of the collar, and a handle for removable insert-ion in the Collar to engage the spring-like members and move the same into position to l0 clamp a nib against the inner wall of the collar.
