To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, THOMAS E. WASH- BURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coalinga, in the county of-Fresno and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Composite- Picture Devices, lo-which the following is a specification. l

This invention provides an-appliance of novel structure which admits of the presentation of a picture or other outline insucha manner as to admit of one or more of the parts being interchanged or substituted by other parts so as to change the general character of the representation or picture.

Specifically considered the invention has relation to a device comprising a plurality oi? rotary members, each of the members being provided with complement-al parts ot' pictures or other representations so that relative movementl of the members bring `the parts or" the -picture or representation into matching relation tc produce a composite picture which may be varied at will.

The device consists of a casing having an observation opening, a plurality of rotary members arranged within the casing in axial alinement and ad .pted to be rotated to bringl them into any desired relative position, said members having parts or" pictures or other representation thereon in such relation as to admit ot the parts matching to produce a composite picture or representation, and means whereby the rotary members may be conveniently turned from a point exterior to the casing.

The invention consists ot the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring to the drawings, forming a part or the specification, Figure l is a side view ot a composite picture device embodying the invention. F ig. 2 is a vertical central section thereof. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the rotary members removed from the casing. F ig. 4 is a detail view of the several rotary members separated and relatively disposed in a group. h I

Corresponding andlikeparts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.

Within the purview oit the invention itis to be understood that the device may comprise any number of rotary members and that the same may be of any form and provided with any matter depending upon the character of the representation or picture to be produced. As illustrated three rotary members are employed and are indicated respectively by the numerals l, 2 and 3. The rotary members are arranged in line so as to rotate about an axis common to all. For the sake of convenience the rotary member 1 is designated as the upper or top member, the member 2 as the middle member and the member 3 as the lower or bot-tom member, said members bearing parts corresponding with the representation ot the human figure, the upper member bearing the representation o a plurality or heads, the middie member theA representation of the body and the lower member the representation the 'toet and legs. 'fileset/several representa tio-ns are designed so as to match and provide a composite gure. ltt will thus be understood that by moving the member `l any one or' the heads appearing thereon may be brought into position to match with the remaining portion of the figure, thereby changing the general character. The same effect may be produced by moving either the middle member or the bottom member or both. it is thus-possible to produce a variet-y of pictures, each having a different appearance from the other. lt is to be understood that .the matter appearing on the rotary members may be oit any nature according'to thc representation to be disclosed.

The casing d is provided in a side with an observation opening 5 which extends lengthwise thereof, the edge'porticn or" the material icomprising the casing bordering upon the opening being bent inwardly to give a finished appearance. [i step 6 is provided upon the bottom ot the casinf7 to receive the lower end'oie the stem 7 having the bottom member-3 attached thereto, said stem projecting through an opening in the to-p or' the casing and having a but-- ton 8 at. its upper end The rotary member 2 is provided with a hollow stem 9 which projects a short distance below the lower side oit the member to rest upon the member 3 and thereby space the two members 2 and 3. The stem 9 receives thestem 7 and likewise projects through t-he opening in the top of the casing and has a button 10 at its upper end.

The lower side of the member 2 is recessed to receivethe upper portion of the member 3. The upper side of the nember 2 is likewise recessed to receive the lower portion of the member 1, which is placed thereon and supported by means of a stem 11 fitted thereto. The stem 11 f-is hollow and receives the stem 9 and its lower portion projects slightly below the member 1 to space it from the member 2. The upper end of the stem 11 projects through the opening in the top of the casing 4 and has a button 1Q, iitted thereto. The'buttons 8, 10 and 12 are of different vdiametersa'nd arev located at different levels, thereby admitting of any one being conveniently grasped for manipulating the desired member to bring the part of the picture or rep.
