JAMES M. LOUGHLIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASS IGNOR TO CUSACK COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
ELIECTRICAL'LY-ILLUMINATED SIGN.
Application filed May 4, 1912; Serial N 0. 695,041.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, James M. LouonLiN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrically- Illuminate-d Signs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being 1nd to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of, this specification.
This invention relates to improvements-in:'- electrically illuminated signs and consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the ap pended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is-a view showing my improved sign in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a view representing an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a View representing a partial vertical section through the sign in a plane indicated by the line 3- 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. at is a view representing a partial horizontal section through the sign in a plane indicated by the line ll of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary side elevation of the sign showing a modified form of the construction. Fig. 6 is a view representing a horizontal section through Fig. 5, in a plane indicated by the The object of my invention is to provide a slgn of econom cal construction comprlsing, together with electrical illuminating means, one or 'more fixed transparent or translucent sign panels adapted to be illuminated by transmitted light from said electrically illuminating means, and a removable panel adapted to be illuminated by reflection from the same source and to be easily replaced by a like panel on which is depicted other or diiferent advertising matsectional limits of the box proper and provide supports for horizontally spaced, fixed sign panels 14, 14, located on the level of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June '10, 1913.
the box 10 and at either side thereof, and of a removable sign panel 15 located be low the box 10 and in a plane intermediate the planes of the first named panels 1%. The inclined side walls 11, 11, of the box provide supports for sockets 17 of a pluralitv of lamps 16, 16, arranged in horizontal lines 111 each of said walls. Each row of said lamps, by reason of the inclination ofthe side walls and by reason of its location back of the panels let, 14: and above and at each side of thepanel 15, is adapted to illuminate'one of the panels let and one face of the panel 15, the panel 14: by light rays transmittedthrough it and the panel 15" by light rays thrown directly upon its face.
The sockets 17 of the lamps 16 are attached to the walls 11, ll, of the box 10, in any convenient and familiar manner, so that their terminals andthe wires connected to them (not shown), are located entirely within the box 10 and areprotected from rain, snow and other forms of precipitated moisture. The top wall 19 of the box 10 is higher at its longitudinal median line than each lateral edge and as shown is curved so that any water which collects on the top Wall will be shed therefrom.
The inclined side Walls 11, 11 are made in one piece which is bent upon itself to form depending flanges or ribs 11, 11?, where the two sides 11, 11, meet; Said flanges provide a groove in which the upper longitudinal margin of the sign-panel 15 is adapted the box 10 are soldered to said flanges 11 and to the end edges of the top wall 10.
.laterally spaced, longitudinally extending, v
Outwardly extending lateral flanges 11, 11
are provided at the upper longitudinal edges of the side walls 11, 11, and the top wall 12 is turned over and under said outwardly extending flanges 11, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3. The box 10 is thus made moisture proof.
Each of the, end walls 13, 13 is bent upon itself adjacent to its vertical median line to form a vertically extending flange 18 projecting from its inner face. In each edge of the vertical end margin of the panel 15 are provided vertically- extendingspaced flanges 19, 19, forming a deep groove adapted to receive [one of the vertical flanges or from a suitable support, as the wall of a ribs 18, 18 of the end walls 13 of the box 10. Said panel-15 is supported in place by means of bolts 20 which extend through suitable apertures formed in the flanges 18, 18 of said end walls and the flanges 19, 19 at each end of the panel 15.- Thus to attach the panel 15 to the sign, said panel is pushed upwardly from below with the vertical ribs or flanges 18 on the end walls 13 of the sign engaged within the grooves formed by the flanges 19, 19, at each end of the said panel, until the upper margin of the panel is brought into engagement within the downwardly opening groove formed by the flanges 11 11 at the lower longitudinal edge of the box 10. The bolts 20 are then inserted through the apertures provided, respectively, in the flanges 19 and in the fianges 18.
A number of panels 15 each containing difl'erent advertising matter may be pro vided for each sign and the said panels may be interchanged as desired. On the fixed panels will be placed matter which does not have to be changed, as a general name givingthe character of the particular business carried. As shown in the drawings, the fixed panels. carry the words drugs, while the removable panel is used to advertise a certain cigar. 'TlllS may be replaced from time to time by panels advertising other tudinally of the sign, sald box having opcigars or other goods.
The fixed panels 14 may be of any familiar construction and as shown consist of a me-, tallic frame 14* attached at its ends to the end walls 13 of the sign box and contain a transparent ortranslucent plate upon which is depicted the advertising matter.
The sign is supported, as shown in the drawings, ona horizontal rod 25' projecting house. Bars 26, 26 are' secured by rivets or: in any other convenient manner to the outer faces of the end walls of the box 10 and are projected above the level of the sign- 5 and 6. In this case, 27 indicates the end walls of thebox, which, as shown in the drawings, are made flat throughout. 28 indicates vertically extending channel members attached to the inner faces of said. end walls below the level of the box 10-. Said channel members, as shown, are each formed by bending a piece of thin metal upon itself to provide spaced flanges 28 The end mar-- gins of the panel 29 constitute projecting flanges and are adapted to engage in the groo'ves formed by said flanges 28 and the marginal. end parts of the panel and the flanges 28 are provided with suitable apertures to receive bolts 30. Otherwise the construction is the same as that heretofore described.
I claim as my invention 1. In an illuminated sign, in combination, a longitudinally extending supporting member having oppositely inclined, downwardly converging sides adapted for the attachment of illuminating devices, end members which project laterally beyond said main supporting member and vertically below the same, fixed translucent panels in horizontal alinement with the inclined sides of said supporting member, and a removable s-ign panel located intermediate of and below said inclined sides, said end members and. the ends of said removable sign pafnel being each provided, the one with a pair of spaced flanges to form a groove, and the other with a single flange adapted for en gagenient in said groove, the said associated flanges being provided" with apertures to receive supporting bolts.
2. Inan electrically illuminated sign, in combination, a closed box extending longipositely inclined, downwardly converging side walls adapted for the attachment of electric lamp sockets, and end'walls which project laterally beyond saidside walls and vertically below the same, means forming laterally spaced, longitudinal flanges at the lower edges of said sidewalls providing a downwardly opening groove, fixed translucent sign panels in horizontal alinement with the inclined sides of said box having their ends attached to the said end walls, and a removable sign panel located inter- ,mediate of and below said inclined side walls and having a part along its upper longitudinal edge adapted to .engage withinsaid downwardly opening groove, said end ways andthe ends'of said removable sign panei being each provided, the one with a pair of spaced flanges to' form ag'roove and the other with a single flange a apted for engagement in said groove, the said flanges being provided with assoc ated apertures to receive supporting bolts.
