Description

J. W. REED. PROTECTIVE DEVICE FOR MINES. APPLIOAT ION FILED SEPT. 18, 1912.

I VIZ V1? SS [55 J'QHN WILSON REED, F CEDAR GROVE, 'WTST "JIQRGERIZL PROTECTIVE DEVICE FOR IIZINES.
1 64 ,378,, Specification o Application filed September 1e,
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that 1', JOHN W. REE-n, citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Grove. in the county or Kanawha and State of Vi est Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Protective Devices for Mines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an alarm device especially adapted for use in mines, tuir nels, and all excavating Work in which a more or less unstable roof left.
The object of'thc invention is to give an audible alarm to the miners or workmen upon any movement in said root even in case such movementshould be merely a slow settling of the roof, unaccompanied. by any cracking or other noise which would give warning to the workmen oi the unsafe condition of the root.
In order to obtain. the object of the invention I employ a post adapt 3. to he rested upon the ground or floor, and extending nearly to the roof. A sleeve carried by this post in which placed a coil spring. and a plate is held against the roof by said epring and suitable alarm devices are so arranged that movement of the spri coils due to pressure oi the earth or root or the excavation or mine will cause an ltltll'lll to he given.
In Figure 1 have vice in position for u in elevation, and parts in Fig. 2 is a section on the line c 1. Fig.3 is an inverted plan ew or :1. top plate.
In these draivin 1:, l .L'EKIQSP. of the mine or tunnel. and to he set vertically the eiu. ii of the post carries a sleeve 3, vided with an interior head t serves to limit movement the sleeve over the postand also forms a 511")0il) for it suiluhlc-lowcrplate Secured t a coil sprii'ig 5. which loosely upwarl'lly tor-one d normally pro ects: fil the sleeve. At its upper end the spring carries 1? Letters Eeteut.

a .top plate 7, which is forced against the roof 1 by the spring (5. SuitablebellsB are carried by the sleeve 3, said bells being; arranged at different points upon the exterior of the sleeve and in different horizontal planes. The inner end of the hell cleppers 9 are suitably pivotally mounted in openings 10 in the sleeve 3 and the inner ends of the clappers extend into the path of the coils of the spring as shown in the drawin It will be obvious that downward movement of the plate 7 due to any settling of the roof will eoinpress the spring, causing the coil? to move downwardly and such movement will rock the slappers 9 upon their pivotal points and then release them fine hell could e employed but by arranging two hells at different points the device is made more sensitive to slight disturbances.
The spring (3 has its upper and lower ends suitably secured in eyes 11 punched respectively from the plates 5 and '2'.
What I claim is:
1.. A device of the kind described cornprielng a suitable support a vertically an ranged and normally extended coil spring carried by said support, roof en iming means carried by the upper en-z of the said spring", and alarm sounding cievices arran ed ud icent said spring and adapted to and actuated by closing n1ove- 'ie coils of said spring. "(re of the kind described co1nmet, a sleeve carried by the upper e post coil. spring loosely arin the sleeve and projecting above eeve. a olate cerrf .(l the top of the g and normally in n ment with a rum, and alarm bells carrieo by the sleeve, the hell rlappr, extending inwardly between the coils of the spring.
3. .i alnrin device of the hind deucrihed mnrgn .lng a vertically arranged post, a l adapted lit over the upper end of the downward movement is continued.
M Leeageve said sleeve and resting upon said been a the coils of the spring when the same are 0011 spring mounted upon semi plate em; compressed.
projecting above the sleeve, a second plate carried by the projecting end of the spring N WILSON REED and adapted to engage a roof, and bells ear- 1 Witnesses:
ried by the sleeve, the bell cieppers extend- JOHN H. Dmqne e,
ing inwardly in position to be engaged by HENRY SMITH.
