STENCIL-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 16, 1913.
Application filed December 5, 1910. Serial No. 595,541.
To all whom 2'?! may concern Be it known that I, HARMoN P. ELLIOTT, residing at Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have in vented an Improvement in,Stencil-I-Iolders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holders for stencils; and is intended as an improvement upon the stencil-holder shown in Letters Patent #676,032, dated June 11, 1901. The holder of said patent is adapted to be used to remove any desired number of stencils or cards from a pile, and especially from a pile contained in a receptacle composed of several upright posts, and also to place a pile of stencils or cards which are contained in the holder in the stencil receptacle, without disarranging the stencils in the pile. The holderof said patent has a back, or piece or pieces composing the back, bent outward to provide a space between the back and the stencil-receiving part of the holder, which is in open communication with the stencil-receiving part of the holder, through its length, and which is adapted to receive one of the post-s of the receptacle when transferring the pile of stencils from one to the other. Often times the pile of stencils which is removed from the receptacles is not suiiicient to completely fill the holder, or some of the stencils in the holder may be removed therefrom, and in such case a follower is arranged in the holder adapted to be moved against one end of the pile, to hold the stencils of the pile in compact form, and this invention has for its object to im prove the construction of the follower tothe end that while adapted for sliding or other connection with the holder, and eX- tended over the end of the stencil-receiving part of the holder, to engage the end of the pile of stencils contained therein, yet is extended across the space between the back and the stencil-receiving part of the holder remote from said stencil-receiving part of the holder, so that in all positions it may occupy it will permit the holder to be applied to and removed from the receptacle for the purpose of transferring a pile of stencils from one to the other.
Figure l is a plan view of a stencil-holder embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same, taken on the dotted line 33, Fig. 1, applied to a stencil receptacle.
Fig. 4 is a left hand end view of the stencilholder.
The stencil-holder proper here shown for the purpose of illustrating this invention is substantially the same as represented in the aforesaid Letters Patent #676,032.
Referring to Fig. 3, A, B, and C, represent three upright posts of a receptacle adapted to be arranged upon or in connection with an addressing-machine of any suitable construction, and to contain a pile of stencils.
a, a, represent the separating blades at one end of the holder, 7), .7), the side pieces or plates, 6, e, the bearings or plates arranged at right angles to the side pieces I), Z), which receive upon them and support the stencils. The back is attached to the bearing plates 6, e, and is here represented as a pair of cross-pieces c, 0, attached at their ends to said bearing plates 6, e, and a back plate 0 attached to said cross-pieces which connects them together. The cross-pieces c, 0, are bent outward, as shown to provide a space between the back and the stencil-re ceiving part of the holder extending from end to end of the holder or thereabout, to receive the upright post C of the receptacle,
when transferring the pile of stencils from one to the other.
The follower here shown for the purpose of illustrating my invention is composed of a flat strip of metal, made long enough to extend transversely across the holder, and bent to the desired form, or it may be otherwise constructed. The follower has hooks g, g, at its ends which extend over and. slidingly yet frictionally engage the upper edges of the side pieces I), 6, whereby it may be moved along on said side pieces toward and from the end of a pile of stencils.
The side pieces 6, b, are made of sheet metal and hence are quite springy, so that they may be pressed toward each other slightly, to admit of the follower being moved along easily, but when pressure upon them is relieved the follower will be tightly held. The follower has downwardly inclined portions 9, g, which extend diagonally across the lower corners of the stencilreceiving part of the holder and pile of stencils therein contained, and serve as the pileengaging portions. The follower is depressed so as to form a downwardly extended portion 9 at the middle, between said inclined portions 9, 9", which extends into the outwardly extended back of the holder, see Fig. 3, thus providing a recess in. the top of the follower which extends beyond the bottom of the stencil-receiving part of the holder so that between the top of the follower and the stencil-receiving part of the holder a space is provided adapted to receive the upright post C, when the holder is applied to the receptacle for the purpose of transferring a. pile of stencils from one to the other. The essential characteristics of my follower are the provision of means for slidably or otherwise engaging the holder whereby it may be moved toward and from the end of the pile of stencils and held securely in whatever position it may be set; the provision of pileenpgaeins' means, and the provision of a space between heel and the stencil-receiving part of the holder to receive the post C of the stencil-receptac-le, and a follower having these characteristics comes within the scope of my invention.
I claim:
1. A holder for stencils having; an out-- *ardly extended back to provide a space between said back and the stencil-receiving part of the holder tltiroughout its length, said space being in open communication with said stencil-receiving; part of the holder, and a follower arranged in said holder, having its end portions extended across the stencil receiving part of the holder and having a recess therehetween, which is in open communication with the stencil-receiving part of the holder and which is extended beyond the bottom thereof, thus to provide a space between the bottom of said recess and the stencil-receiving part of the holder, substantially as described.
2. A holder for stencils having an outwardly extended back to provide a space between said back and the stencil-receiving: part of the holder, and a follower extended transversely across the holder and connected thereto having downwardly inclined pileengaging portions, and a downwardly extended port-ion between said pile-engaging portions, which projects into the outwardly extended back to the holder, to provide a space between the follower and the stencilreceiving part of the holder, substantially as described.
3. A holder for stencils having an outwardly extended back to provide a space between. said back and the stencil-receiving partof the holder, and a follower extended transversely across the holder consisting of a strip of metal bent to form hooks at its ends which slidably engage the holder, and downwardly inclined pile eng'aging portions, and a downwardly extended p'ortion between said pile-engaging portions, which projects into the outwardly extended back of the holder, to provide a space between the follower and the stencil-receiving part of the holder, substantially as described.
at. A. holder for stencils having an outwardly extended back to provide a space between said back and the stencil-receiving part of the holder throughout its length, said space being: in open communication with aid stencil-receiving part of the holder, and a follower arranged in said holder, having its end portions extended across the stencilreceiving part of the holder and having a recess therebetween, which is in open communication with the stencil-receiving; part of the holder and which is extended beyond the bottom thereof, thus to provide a space bet-ween the bottom of said recess and the stencil-receiving part of the holder, said follower having means at its ends to slidably engage the sides of the holder, substantially as described.
A holder for a stencil having side pieces made yielding in a direction toward each other and having an outwardly extended back to provide a space between said back and the stencil-receiving part of the holder, which extends from end to end of the holder, and a follower for the stencils in said holder, extended transversely with respect to the holder, having means at its ends to slidably engage the upper edges of said yielding side pieces, a portion of said follower crossing; the stencil-receiving part of the holder and a portion extended downwardly and along the space between the back and the stencilreceiving part of the holder, which is arranged remote from the stencil-receiving part of the holder, to provide a space between the top of the follower and the stencil-receiving part of the holder, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HARMON P. ELLIOTT.
