WRITING DEVICE.
L tt ti hl titl.
To all whom it may concern Be 1t known that 1, CHARLES A. NEIS- wnjsnnn, a citizen of the Unlted States, re-
siding at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in YVriting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a free-arm movement writing device, being an attachment for a penholder, and its purpose is to prevent what is called finger movement and to induce what is called muscular or fore-arm movement in the execution of penmanship.
It is the object of my invention to produce a device of this nature which is very simple in construction, light, easily applied to the penholder and to the hand, easily adjustable, durable, and which compels the writer to hold the penholder in correct writing position.
To attain this object my invention comprises a single piece of light metal adapted to extend along the inner side of the thumb, oneend bearing against the ball of the thumb and the other end formed to grasp the penholder at the end of the thumb, said piece being formed with a clip at its middle portion adapted to embrace the back of the thumb between the first and second joints.
in the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification and in the description of the drawings, I have shown my invention in its preferred form and have shown what I deem to be the best mode of applying the principles thereof; but it is to be iiinderstood that, within the scope of the appended claims, I contemplate changes in form, proportions, and materials, the trans position of parts, and the substitution of equivalent members, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
i igure 1 is a side view of the hand, wrist, and part of the forearm in correct writing position, with a penholder and my writing device held in proper positions, the writing device being shown partly in dotted outline where otherwise concealed from View. Fig. 2 is a side view of the writing device attached to the penholder. Fig. 3 a top View of the writing device.
Similar reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
A is my writing device, which I term a ritogra 'ih, made preferably of a single piece of light bendable sheet metal. At one Specification of Letters Patent.

end, B, it is curved and preferably enlarged, so as to bear easily and comfortably against the ball of the thumb. At the other end, C, it is formed into a loop which is adapted to grasp the penholder I). At its middle portion it is forn'ied with a clip E adapted to embrace the back of the thumb between the first and second joints. The device is adapted to fit along the inner side of the thumb with its inner end bearing against the ball of the thumb, with the clip embracing the back of the thumb between the first and second joints, and with its outer end at the end of the thumb, the loop being so disposed that the penholder rests against the side of the hand at or near the third knuckle of the fore-linger, which is generally conceded to be the correct form. Generally the loop would grasp the penholder about an inch above the pen point; but this may be varied to suit any circumstance. The loop or penholder is grasped between the ends of the thumb and fore-linger in the usual manner.
The clip is an important feature of my invention in that it bears against the back of the thumb between the hrst and second joints while the opposite ends of the device bear against the ball and end of the thumb, thus holding the thumb rigid and prevent ing moving the penholder by the thumb and fore-finger.
The device so shaped as to permit the penholder to be grasped in an easy natural position without straining. The device being made of bendable metal the clip may be easily bent to adapt it to any writers thumb.
hat I claim is:
1. A device of the kind described comprising a strip of bendable metal adapted to lit along the inner side of the thumb, one end being bent inwardly and enlarged and adapted to bear against the ball of the thumb and the other end being formed into a loop adapted to grasp a penholder between the ends of the thumb and fore-linger, said strip being formed with a clip at its middle portion adapted to embrace the back of the thumb between the first and second joints.
2. A device of the kind described con1pris ing a strip formed to fit lengthwise along the inner side of the thumb, one end being bent. inwardly to bear against the ball of the thumb and the other end being formed into a loop to grasp a penholder between the ends of the thumb and forefinger, said strip being formed with a clip at its middle portion to embrace the back of the thumb be the thumb between the first and second 10 tween the first and second joints. joints, and being also formed with a means 3. A device of the kind described comprisfor rigidly grasping a penholder.

at its middle portion to embrace the back of J. M. STARK.
