GUIDING ATTACHMENT FOR PENI-IOLDERS.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that BERRY H. COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shreveport, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guiding Attachments for Penholders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in educational appliances and has particular reference to a pen holder.

The invention has for its object to provide a pen holder for students.

In the art of pemnanship it is of great im portance that the writing be accomplished by a wrist or muscular arm movement as contrasted to a finger movement. The finger movement comes most natural to the great majority of persons and is readily acquired, whereas the art of using the wrist or muscular arm movement is one which must be studied and practiced. The disadvantage of the finger movement is that in comparatively long periods of writing the hand becomes cramped and tired. It is also impossible with this movement to write a flowing hand, by virtue of which the writing is much more speedily and legibly accomplished.

My invention therefore aims to attain the above object by the provision of a pen holder embodying associated means for so positioning the fingers of the writer that all movement used in forming the letters must be made from the wrist and arm and cannot be made by movement of the fingers.

My invention further aims to embody said means in a simple practical, and efficient device and one which will be inexpensive to manufacture, and it consists in the following features of construction and arrangement as will be hereinafter described, with refer ence to the accompanying drawing in which,

Fig. 3, is a perspective view of a pen holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 4 is a plan view partly in section of one of the guiding elements. Fig. 5, is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 6, is a plan view partly in section of the other guiding element, and Fig. 7, is a side elevation thereof.

In the practical embodiment-of my invention I employ an elongated holder 1,

which is designed to be grasped by the hand and which carries at its lower end. a clip 2, designed to receive a penpoint 3, of conven tional form.

The invention specifically resides in at tachments to be carried by the holder 1, and which confines the fingers of the writer in the desired position.

The lower guiding element 4, is adapted to receive thereon the fingers of the writer and comprises separate members 5 and 6, looped at one end to form clasping members 7, and

provided with a loose stud 8, having a threaded end adapted to receive an adjusting thumb screw 9 for tightening or loosening said clasping members 7, ab out the holder 1. This guiding element 4, is adapted to extend at right angles from the holder 1, when clasped thereto and serves not only as a cooperative for the confinement of .the finger but also as a rest to steady the pen in its movements, the little finger of the hand being adapted to rest in the rear, and the remaining fingers to lie over the same, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

The guiding element 10 is adapted to project rearwardly on a horizontal plane into the crotch of the hand and to form an inclined angle with the holder. To this end the element 10 comprises the separate members 11 and 12 looped at their forward ends to form clasping members 13 disposed at an incline to the members 11 and 12 adapted to be clasped about the holderl by means of the adjusting thumb screw 14 adapted to be received upon the threaded end of the loosestud 15, projecting through the member 11, and through the member 12. The rear ends of the members 11 and 12-terminate in laterally extending heads 16, which engage within the crotch of the hand.

The manner of use will be clearly understood by reference to Figs. 1 and 2 in which it will be seen that by reason of its inclined clasp the element 10 extended rearwardly on a horizontal plane within and engaging the crotch of the hand. It will also be seen that the element 4 is connected adjacent the pen point? and receives the fingers as heretofore described. Thus each of the

4 and 10 cooperate with the other in preventing the writer bending his fingers and in necessitating the use of a free and easy swing of the wrist and forearm to accomplish the purpose 1n vlew.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is,

1. A pen holder comprising a rest bar having one end fixed thereto and the other end free, said rest bar extending at an angle to said holder, and a member secured to said. holder above said rest bar and extending rearwardly in a horizontal plane.

2. A pen holder comprising a rest bar having one end fixed thereto and the other end free, said rest bar extending at an angle to said holder, and a member secured. to said holder above said rest bar and extending rearwardly in a horizontal plane, said member cooperating with the said rest bar for the purpose described.

3. A pen holder comprising a rest bar secured thereto at an angle and having one end fixed and the other end free, and a member secured to said holder above said rest bar and extending rearwardly in a horizontal plane, said member terminating in an enlarged head and. cooperating with said rest bar for the purpose described.

4. In a device of the character described, the combination with an elongated holder of a pair of guiding bars adj ustably secured thereto, for the purpose described.

5. In a device of the character described, the combination of an elongated holder and aplurality of cooperating guide-bars adapted to be clamped thereto at separate points, for the purpose described.

6. In a device of the character described, the combination with an elongated holder of two guiding elements, each consisting of two members looped at one end, and adapted to be secured to said holder.
