HAT-PIN SHIELD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 29, 1911.
Patented J une 10, 1913.
Serial No. 630,118.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN R. MURRAY, of Alameda, county of Alameda, and State of California, have invented a Hat-Pin Shield, said device being constructed so that the shank of the hat-pin when inserted into the shield is automatically seized by the corrugated surface of a clamp made of spring-steel or metal of like properties, the operation of which is described later.
This invention relates to hat pin protec' tors and has for its object the production of a hat pin guard which will be securely held upon the sharpened end of the pin and which will hold the pin within the hat and also prevent the point of the pin from injuring other persons. This guard is so constructed that it will be securely held to the pin, but, at the same time, may be easily removed when desired.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a View showing the protector in longitudinal section and showing a pin mounted therein. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section along the line 22, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the manner of holding the pin within the guard. Fig. 4: is a View similar to Fig. 3 showing the pin securing means in a position to permit the withdrawal of the pin.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that this pro tector comprises a tubular sleeve 10 which has a flared end portion 11 with which an ornamental head 12 is connected. An enlarged conical portion 13 is formed at the opposite end of the sleeve 10 and is con nected with a smaller conical portion 141 which is positioned within the outer conical portion 13 and terminates in a small tube 15 which extends through the tube 10 and into the enlarged flared portion 11. This tube 15 receives the hat pin 16 and has a packing 17 of any suitable material positioned in its inner end portion so that the point of the pin will not be blunted. The tube 15 is provided with a longitudinally extending opening 18 which is formed in alinement with an opening 19 formed in the outer tube 10 and the locking means is secured to the outer surface of the tube 10 and passes through the openin s 19 and 18 so that it can engage the pin 16. This locking means comprises a strip of spring metal 20 and is secured to the outer face of the tube 10 by means of rivets 21. The strip 20 is bent inwardly intermediate its length as indi :ated by the numeral 29, and has its inner portion 93 provided with teeth 21 which engage the pin 16, thus preventing the removal of the pin. An car 25 is formed upon the inner end portion 23 of the strip 520 and a pin 26 is connected with the ear 25 and has a reduced end 97 which passes through an opening 28 formed in the tube 10. This pin atl'ords means for raising the inner portion 23 so that the teeth 2-1 will not engage the pin 16, thus permitting the pin 16 to be withdrawn. By reducing the end 27 a shoulder 29 is formed which prevents the spring strip 20 from expanding to too great an extent.
hen using this device the pin 16 is inserted within the tube 15 and can easily pass by the teeth 21 as they are pointed toward the inner end of the tube 15. The teeth 24: normally prevent the protector from slipping from the pin but when it is desired to remove the protector the pin 26 is pressed inwardly which removes the inner portion of the strip 20 from engagement with the pin 16, as shown in Fig. 4, thus permitting the protector to be easily removed trom the pin.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:-
A hat pin guard comprising an outer tube, an inner pin receiving tube positioned within said outer tube, said tubes being provided with alined openings, a U-shaped spring secured to said outer tube and passing through said openings with its free inner end portion positioned in said inner tube, teeth formed upon the inner face of the inner portion of said spring, an ear extending from said spring, and an operating pin secured to said ear and extending through said tubes.
