Specification of Letters Patent.
latentedtlnne 10, 1913.
Application filed January 3, 1913. Serial No. 739,981.
5 of lltlassaehusetts,.have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'lenpin Gaines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention trelates to devices for playingv ten 'pins or' howling.
.It is especially useful in connection with miniature bowling alleys but may be used il desired on full sized alleys.
It is of the type wherein the pins whivh are Struck by the ball or by other pins are llftedinto the air out ol the way and in which all the pins which have been displaced can be reset collectivel y after each player-"s turn.
My present invention comprises iinproved means for removing the pins and improved means for resetting' them.
Some of its purposes are to provide nieehanism' whereby when a pin is displaced. by the ball or by another pin, it will he lifted slowly if desired so that it may have a chance to swing and strike other pins instead of being suddenly jerked out of the Avay. At the saine time by my construction I can so adjust the 'parts that. the pins (will be jerked out. of the way very quickly if desired.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation with the side removed and seine parts in section Fig. 2 is a plan View with-the top removed. Fig'. 8 is a side elevation of a `miniature alley from the side, and Fig. Ll `from the front. Fie'. 5 is a detail oft'he pin lifting action. Fie'. (l is a View lfrom the front on line .li-Y ol.' llig. l with the lside in place. Eig. 'l' is a detail view Afrom the front of lthe tail locking,|` means. Fig. 8 is a view from'lhe top of one of the locking' bars.
The body of the alley which as shown may consist of a substantially rectangular box 1 which may have an opening covered with glass or nettingr 2. At the Vback I prefer to have a superstructure or box'B which I will call the pin house because it contains the ten pins and `the mechanism imrnediately l' connected with them. The alley 1f of the rminiature type may be suitably supportedv upon proper standards 7 3' and 4. f
prefer to have ,gratingsI oieach side of ,pijajjiojiseA 3 through `which and through as shown in Figs.
plurality ol' lifting rods 4eounterlmlance the grating r2, the mechanism can be seen. I prefer to have the top 5 otE the pin house hinged so as to reach the inside readily. It may be locked by a hasp and padloek (l if desired. '.l`he nlain floor t) upon which the balls are rol lcd may incline upward toward the back. At the rear wall ol the pin house 1s preferably a suitable bark stop or buffer l0. Ihe back ol lloor il may be ol wedge or diamond shape and below bull'er 10 l prefer to have a tloor 1t which inclines downward to the right and left' and joins at each side an inclined. runway 12 by means of which the balls are returned to the player`s position.
AMy invention relates especially to the pin raisingr and resetting means. llaeh ten pin 2l of the body of ten pins is carried by a pin hanger to which is preferably a flat nietallie strip each otE which at the forward edge has n looking.; notch 23. The notches ot' all these pin hangers are substantially on a level' when the pins are depressed and are adapted to engage one ol the locking bars 22 as shown.
Near the rear ot` the pin house is a fixed `transverse shaft 30 which extends across the pin house and may be supported by the walls thereot. Upon this are pivotally mounted a or springs 3l. rlhese lifting rods are ol. varying' lengths (wirresponding to the distance. of the different` plus troni shaft llt), each is eoiled around the shalt loosely and earh has near its front end a loop l2 which passes through a suit;- able hole in a pin hanger ttl thus supporting it. A guide lneinber ll extends beyond thtl pin hanger between one ot. the U shaped guides lt0 which are attached respectively to and rise above the locking' bars 22. .lhereby side swayingi of any o l` the rods 3l is pre vented ited. lEach rod 3l is bent in the form of a coiled spring at l-t around the shaft 30 and extends backward therefrom at its back end in the form of a tail 35.
On each tail 35,11' place a slidable weight ft2 which is pierced so as to slide thereon. Each weight is provided with a Set screw `+13 whereby it. can be adjusted in any position upon the tail 35. It is manifest that; the weight 42 may be ot such weight that it will pin .Q1 and the other parte in front of shaft 30.
0n a. well known physical principle, the weight 42 may he slid back and 'forth until and their upward nioveuunt is linly ,hommes ,strilio und paros no called to nnnle more rwniily, if it is desired. however, o obtain z1- qnicl; :wioii oilthe pins, the mil locking' member 50 may be nSed. ThiS inon'ihor coniprises o. cross bur 50 which extends ont'over l'he enfls o1 lhe tails 35, and sliclzihle slotted Hide members; 5l, the slots in 'which pass over holts g upon which iro thumb nuts 53. 'f it is; desired to nso a. spring action insiemi oi? a weight or gravity zwion, har 50 is forced down against the tails 3.3 as shown h5' rho cloiiofl lines in Fig. l and when thej,v are sniicinl'ly fileprssed, thumb jnno 53 are fighiened thus locking' them in poriiion. in his Ymjf, lh@ n'oighf l2 nro rendermi use loss :and l'he spring noi'ion of each iuil 235, coil ZH and :irin 3l :1ro brought into play.
