Description

L. A. CARPENTER & 11. MIDDLETON.
TWINE CUTTER.
APPLICATION I'ILBD PEIJ.21,1911.
Patented June 3, 1913.
WITNESSES LEWIS A. CARPENTER AND RICHARD MIDDLETON, OF REVERE, MASSACHUSETTS.
TWINE-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 3, 1913.
Application filed February 21, 1911. Serial No. 609,970.
To all whom it may concern lie it known that we, Lewis A. OARPEN- 'rnn and ltloniann Minnmrron, citizens of the United States, residing in Revere, county of b'u'lli'olk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Twine-Cutters, of which the following description, in connection with the atacompanying drawings, is a specification, .like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to a cutting device especially designed and adapted for cutting twine, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive and etlicient device, which is adapted to be secured to the edge of a counter or other support, and in which the knife or cutting blade is slidably mounted so as to permit it to be removed from the holder without removing the latter from the counter or other support, when it is desired to sharpen the knife or to reverse it, as will be described.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a twine cutter embodying this invention, and secured in operative position to the edge 01 a counter. Fig. 2, a plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3, a vertical section on the line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. 1, a horizontal section on the line lk-4, Fig. 1, and Fig. 5, a view in perspective of the parts of the de vice separated.
In the present instance, we have shown one construction of twine cutter embodying this invention, which comprises two members a, 7,), preferably made ot sheet. metal such as sheet brass or steel and a cutting blade or knife 0, which is slidably n'iounted in the holder termed by the members (I, 7).
The member a consists of a substantially flat plate provided on its upper side or edge with lugs or lingers 10, 12, which form between them a slot 1 said lingers tor the best results being bent so as to lie substantially parallel with the plate a and overlap the same. The plate (1. is provided at its opposite or bottom edge with an inturned flange or lip 'l l extended transversely of the plane of the slot 13 tor a purpose as will be described.
The member Z) consists oi. a metal. plate having a preferably curved center portion 15 extended transversely of said plate for the width of the same, and provided at its center with a channel or groove 16, which extends from one edge ot the curved center portion toward the opposite edge but stop ping short of said opposite edge to provide the channel or groove 16 with an end Wall 17 (see Fig. 2-3), for a purpose as will be described.
The members a, 7), are designed to be secured together and this result may be accomplished by providing the member I) with a llange or lip 25, which extends around the edge olf the plate or member 0 and is designed to be folded over the member a as clearly shown in l igs. 2 and 1.
The curved portion 15 ot the member 6 cooperates with the member a to form a chamber 26 into and out of which the knife 0 is bodily movable, and the fingers 10, 12 are arranged on the member a, so that when the latter is secured to the member I) as by the [hinge 25 or otherwise, the slot 13 formed by said fingers will be in line or register with the groove or channel 16, and the flange or lip 141 will be opposite the end Wall 17 as represented in Fig. 3. The flange 14. and end wall 17 term a stop to limit the move ment oil the blade or knife 0 into the chamber 26, and the fingers 10, 12, and the side walls of the groove or channel 16 form guides for the blade or kni'te as the latter is slid into the said chamber.
The members a, 7) are provided with suitable openings 20, 21, respectively, which register and are designed to have screws 22 or other :tastcning devices passed through them for the purpose of attaching the knife holder to the edge of a counter 30 or other support. The knife or blade 0 may and preferably will be provided with V-shaped cutting edges 31. atits opposite ends, so as to enable the knife to be reversed when one cutting edge becomes dull and with sub stantially straight sides, which frictionally engage the members of the holder. The curved portion [5 ol the ineml'ier 7) may and prel m-ably will be provided in its opposite side walls with slots 32. so as to expose the active cutting edge ot the knife when the latter is in its operative position within the holder.
Tn operation, the knife holder is secured to the front. edge of the counter or other support 30 as represented in Fig. 1, and the knife 0 is then slid into the chamber 26 until its lower end abuts against the stops 1 17, whereupon the device is in condition for use is the knife is held firmly by the frictional engagement of its sides with the member of the holder. llvhen it is desired to cut a piece of string or twine, the latter isgrasped bythe operator and forced down agamst the exposed or active cutting edge of the knife, the string passing down into the slots 32 in the member 6 of the holder. Whenthe exposed cutting edge becomes dull, the knife can be readily removed by pressing upwardly upon the lower end of the knife, which may be effected by means of a pencil, piece of stick or other device passed into the holder from its under side.
' l Ve have herein shown one form of construction o-f knife holder in which the knife is slidably mounted so as to be bodily removed from the holder without disturbing 'the'flatter, but we do not desire to hunt the invent on to the particular construction a slot, provided with a flange extended tra1'1sversely of the plane of said slot, and
the 'othermember having a curved portion rovided with a substantially central chan net or gr om; extended but partially the widthof saidmember to leave an end wall for said channel or groove, and provided with slots in its opposite side walls, and a knife blade slidable between said fingers and in said channel and cooperating with said end wall and flange, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, in combination, a knife holder comprising sheet metal members secured together and separated to form a chamber open at its opposite ends, means on one of said members extended laterally between the open ends of said chamber to permit the holder to be secured in a fixed position, a knife inserted into the said chamber at one end thereof with its side edges in frictional engagement with said members and capable of being pushed out of said chamber by means inserted into the opposite end of said chamber, and means within the chamber for gniding the knife, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, we have signed our names to this Specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
