' ROLL-BAKER HOLDER AND CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented-June 3, 1913.
Application filed June 28, 1912. Serial No. 706,484.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD V. EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county oi Jo Daviess and 0 State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Roll-Paper Holders and Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved roll paper holder and cutter for holding upon a store counter and elsewhere a roll of paper from which sheets of varying size may be cut-01f at will, the invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved roll paper holder and cutter which is so constructed as to leave a free, hanging end of the paper roll, after a piece has been cut off, which free hanging end may be readily grasped when it is desired to cut off another piece, and thus avoid the necessity of having to turn the roll when it is desired to project one end of the same for grasping. 7
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved roll paper holder and cutter which embodies a guide for the paper which also serves as a brake for bearing on the paper roll and preventing casual rotation thereof.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a roll paper holder and cutter constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same.
In accordance with my invent-ion, I provide a suitable support. This support is here shown as comprising a base 1, a pair of standards 2 which rise from the base and a cross bar 3 which connects the upper ends of the standards. The standards are formed with int-urned base and upper portions 45, which, respectively, bear on and under the base and the cross bar and are secured to the base and cross bar by means of bolts 6-7. Hence, the standards may be readily detached from the base and the cross bar and the parts of the support disassembled. The standards are also formed at points a suitable distance from their lower ends and on their inner sides with substantially semi tubular bearings 8. A direction roller 9 has its ends tapered and revolubly mounted in bearing openings near the upper ends of the standards, the said direction roller connecting the standards and being arranged a suitable distance below the cross bar 3.
A cutter bar 10 is provided which has arms 11 at its ends. These arms are adjustably secured in an inclined position to the standards by 'means of bolts 12, the said bolts passing through the standards and engaging certain of the adjusting openings '13 with which the arms of the cutter bar are provided. Hence, the cutter bar may be adjusted toward and from thestandards and may *be secured at any desired point vertically. It will be understood that when the cutter bar has been adjusted appropriately it is then held against casual movement by tightening the nuts of the clamping bolts 12 and it will be understood that when the said nuts are loosened, the clamping bolts form pivots for the arms of the cutter bar which adapt the cutter bar to be adjusted, as desired. The cutter bar is then beveled on its near side as at 14: to form a cutting edge 15 at its lower side. i
A guide and brake 16 is provided which comprises a substantially U-shaped bar comprising a central portion 17 and arms 18, the latter having outturned spindles 19 which are mounted in suitable bearing openings 20 with which the arms 11 of the cutter bar are provided. The arms 18 are also connected by a bar 20 which is opposite and spaced from the central portion or bar 17 of the brake and guide, a slot 21 being thus formed between the bars 17 and 20.
In the operation of my improved roll paper holder and cutter, the roll of paper, indicated at a is provided with an axle b, the ends of which are mounted in the bearings 8, so that the paper roll is adapted to revolve. The paper or free end is passed through the slot 21 of the guide and brake, then up around and over the direction roller 9 and then back and downwardly through the said slot 21 so that a free end of the paper sheet is provided below the guide and brake. The bar 17 of the guide and brake bears on the upper side of the paper roll by its own gravity and serves to prevent the paper roll from casually rotating. In order to cut off a piece of the paper, the free end of the roll is first grasped and drawn outwardly to the desired extent according to the desired length of the paper and it is then drawn off by an upward movement against the sharp lower edge of the cutter bar. That portion of the paper between the cutter bar and the roller then drops back on one side of the roll and forms a free end which may be readily grasped when it is desired to cut off another piece or sheet.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invent-ion, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim The herein described roll paper holder and cutter comprising a support, a direction roller carried by the support, means for mounting a paper roll on the support below the said direction roller, a cutter bar having arms secured to the support and spaced from one side of the paper roll, and a guide and brake element pivotally connected to the arms of the cutter bar adapted to bear against the paper roll, and having a slot through which the paper sheet may be passed and thereby adapting the paper from the roll to be passed through the slot, then around the direction roller and then back through the slot so as to form a free end of the paper roll after a piece of the sheet has been cut off by the bar.
In testimony whereof I afi ix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
