Letters :Patent No. 106,368, dated. August 16, 1870.
IMPRQVEMENT. IN KEY-HOLE GUARDS,
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom, it 'may concern: Beit known that I, J. HILTON JONES, of Binghamton, in the county ot' Broome and State of New York, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Lock-Protectors, ot' which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a vertical-section through adoor, in a direction parallel to its face, with a look therein, having my improved protector, shown only in part, applied toit.
Figure 2, a section taken as indicated by the line :vxin tig.1; and
,Figure 3, section takenas denoted by the line y y through a lever by which the protector is operated.
Similar letters of' reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in a pivoted block or bolt, as it may be termed, haring connected with it a knob or lever arrangedto project through the door', so as to be operated from the interior or onel side of' the latter, and serving to lift the piioted block into a position as a protector, and to automatically lock it, and, when released ii'om lock, to allow of the pivoted block droppring hy its weight out'ot' the line ofthe key-holes.
`Referring to the'accompanying drawing- A represents a door, and
B, the case of an ordinary mortise 'or any other suitable lock applied thereto.
Arranged within the lock-case isa block, c, pivoted as atri), and of a thickness so as to extend from plate to plate of the case, or thereabout, and otherwise of a size so that, when raised', it covers or overlaps internally both key-holes c c' of the lock, to prevent picking of the latter.
It is preferred to make said block or boit of chilled iron or steel; also the outside plate of the case oi the llgclt of similaimaterial, to protect the lock against irillin Couieoted'with the pivotor spindle B o'f the block O, by a socketed attachment, D, is alever, E, pivoted, as at d, to the socketedpeee D, which latter tits the pivotb of the block, in such a manner as to turn it, Y
and which, together with its levery E, is made to p ro` ject through a hole, e, in the esontcheon lBon theinside face ot -the door, and is, .restrained from being 'drawn out by a collar, j'. The lever E has a head on its outer end to facilitate it, and the socketed piece D being turned to lift the block O from its pendent position, shown by dot-4 ted lines in g. 1, to the. position represented for it by full lines inthe same figure, accordingly as it is required to block up the key-holes or uncoverjthe same on the inside ofthe case..
To block up the space in the case between the keyholes, the key is rst removed from the lock, after locking the lock,'and the lever E' turned to` lift the block O into its closed position ofthe key-holes, when,
on h old being released, the lever E drops by its weight,
and causes a tooth, g, on the inner end oi' it, to shoot into .a notch, h, in the escutcbeon F, which holds the pivoted block O locked in its raised or projecting position.
'lo open the space between the key-holes for insertion of the key, it is only necessary to slightly litt the 'lever E, so as to throw its tooth. g outot the notch h, when 'the weight of the block U will cause the latter to drop out ot'v the way of the key-holes, and' to turn the lever so that its tooth g is out of locking vline with the notch It. In, this way the protector is made to automatically lock itself, and to open and keep open. f I
What ishere claimed, `anddesired to be 'secured' by Letters Patent, is-
The lever E, pivoted to an oscillating axis D, in combination with the key-hole guard O, substantially as shown and described.
