Description

G. G. WARE. BOX COVER FASTENER.
' APPLIOAT ION FILED D110. 18, 1912. 1,063,628.

TES PATENT UFGE.
BOX-COVER EASTENER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE CLAREnon WARE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainville, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Box-Cover Fasteners, of which the following is a speclfication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in box cover fasteners, and the object of the invention is to provlde a fastener of improved structure which may be firmly secured to the box and which has.
means for effectively securing the cover to the box.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fastener of simplified and economical construction which can be easily secured in position on the box, and which will automatically lock the cover on both sides of the points of penetration of the fastener on the cover.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional perspective view of a box and its cover, showing the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the fastener prior to bending thereof into final or completed form.
The box 1 has a cover 2 applied thereto, the latter being formed with end slots 3. As shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings the blank from which the fastener is subsequently bent into final or complete form is composed of a flat body 4 which has a pair of spaced depending prongs or points 5 at its lower side and a flap 6 at its upper side, the flap 6 being disposed at a point approximately at the center of the space between the points 5. As depicted in Fig. 2 of the draw ings the body portion 4 engages the end wall of the box on its outer side, and has its points 5 projecting through said wall and bent inwardly and extending into the inner face of the end wall so as to be clenched thereto. The flap 6 engages over the upper edge of the end wall and is turned down wardly to engage the inner face of said end wall and projects into said inner face so as to be clenched thereto. Projecting upwardly from the top side of the body l on opposite sides of the flap 6 are two arms 7 which are spaced apart and which extend through the slots 3 of the cover 2. The base ends of the arms 7 are formed with substantially U- Specification of Letters Patent.

shaped cuts which form tongues 8, said tongues, as depicted in Fig. 1 of the drawings, engaging the box top on the sides of the slots 3 of said top opposite to the sides on which the arms 7 engage the top, where by it will be observed that a double hold is given to each arm by reason of the tongues 8 formed on said arms, with the result that the cover is effectively held in'position.
In use of the invention the arms and tongues occupy the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2, and upon bending the arms to the full line position shown in Fig. 2, the tongues will be automatically moved with the arms so as to be moved up out of the slots 3 so as to engage the cover 2 on the sides of slots 3 opposite to the sides of said slots on which the arms 7 project. It will further be seen that the body of the fastener is rigidly secured to the box at three points which afford a firm anchorage for the same. To remove the cover the arms 7 are turned into a perpendicular position which will cause the tongues 8 to enter slots 3 to aline with the arms so that the box cover may be moved upwardly out of engagement with the arms.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A box cover fastener composed of a body having spaced lower prongs on its bottom side and having a flap on its upper side disposed substantially in the space between said lower prongs, an arm on each side of said flap extending upwardly from the body and a tongue struck out from each arm at the base thereof.
2. A box cover fastener composed of a body having spaced lower prongs on its bottom side and having a flap on its upper side disposed substantially in the space be tween said lower prongs, said body being secured to an end wall of the box, the flap extending over the top edge of said wall and being clenched thereto and the prongs extending through the end wall and clenched thereto, an arm on each side of the flap, and a tongue struck out from each arm at the base thereof, the arms being for engagement through the box cover slots and adapted to seat thereon, the tongues being for seating engagement on the cover on the opposite sides of the slots on which said arms are disposed.
3. A box cover fastener composed of an element secured to the box and having an arm for engagement through a slot in the box cover and for seating on the latter, said arm having a tongue for seating on the box cover on the side of the slot opposite to that on which the arm seats.
4. A box cover fastener including a body secured to the box and means carried by said body for penetration through the cover and for engagement with the cover on opposite sides of the point of penetration of said means.
5. A box cover fastener including a mem- I ber secured to the box and means carried by the member for penetration through the cover, said means having a part which is automatically engaged with the cover on the side of the point of penetration of said means through the cover opposite to the side wardly to engage the inner face of said end 30 Wall, and means on the body to engage the box cover to hold the latter in position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE CLARENCE WARF.
