To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH SAoHTLE- BEN, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Essen-on-the-Ruhr, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydraulic Recoil-Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hydraulic recoil brakes for gun carriages and particularly to those with variable recoil.
The object of the present invention is to provide a brake of this kind wherein a' simple device for regulating the length of the recoil, by means of the elevation of the gun, is supplied and so constructed, that the, engagement or disengagement of the different parts of the device is directlyeccomplished in assembling or disassembling the carriage.
In the accompanying drawings one em bodiment of the invention is represented and Figure 1 shows a side View, partly in section,
of the parts in question of a gun carriage,
with the gun in horizontal position and some parts broken away; Fig. 2 a detail plan view, partlyin section along line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a rear view, partly'in section along line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 a similar view to Fig. 1 but with gun elevated, and Fig. 5 a section along line 5-5 of Fig. 1, seen from the right and drawn in larger scale.
The distinguishing feature of the present invention over others of this kind resides in the connection between the slide H and the carriage body C.
The gun A rests in the cradleB, which is provided with, horizontal trunnions b supported by bearings in the'cradle C. These trunnions are part of a fork b inclosing the cradle C. The bearings have hinged trunnion caps 0 The piston rod 6 of the hydraulic brake nas a rotating disk G near the piston E, Fig. 1, which disk is guided by helical grooves in the brake cylinder D. The latter is connected to the gun barrel.
A muff F is screwed on the front end of the piston rod 6 and the mud has areal-ward extending, L-shaped arm f f provided with a pin 1" at its free end. This pin f engages'in a groove k in the aforesaid slide H which groove runs obliquely to the axis of the pistonrod 6 while the slide H can be moved parallel to the axis of the piston rod e in a bearing 5 secured to the cradle B. At its rear end the slide H carries'an extension bar h into which-astud K is screwed.

fork 6 The stud K has a roller 70 at its outer end, see Fig. 5. A guide block S, secured on the carriage body 0 is provided with a. groove 8 in which the roller 70 works. This groove s is open at the top and runs in a vertical direction as regards the movement of the cradle B and enters a slit 6 of the of the slide H when the cradle is in the level position.
When the gun barrel is horizontal, the
parts will take the relative positions as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 5. The brake is then set for the longest recoil.
When the gun barrel is elevated, the slide H willpartake of'the elevation, but, on account of the engagement between the roller V7c and the guide piece S, will, at the same time, be drawn toward the rear end of the cradle C, as the guide piece does not partake of the elevation of the gun barrel. The roller moves simultaneously a certain distance upward in the groove .9 As a consequence of this displacement of the slide H, the piston rod e with the piston E will be turned, actuated by the pin f working in the groove k If the gun barrel be elevated at about 45, the parts will take'the relative position indicate d in Fig. 4. The brake is then adjusted for a short recoil. v
To take the carriage apart, the trunnion caps have only to be opened, when the cradle can immediately be lifted out, the roller is simultaneously leaving'the groove 8 The assembling of the carriage is performed with equal ease. The described device fordisplacing the slide H is therefore particularly well suited for such mounts that have to be taken apart during transportation as for instance for mountain guns.
