To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN L. CoRNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Chelsea, in the county of Rogers and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Reach Ends, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in wagon poles or reaches and relates more particularly to improved means for quickly attaching and detaching said poles or reaches.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a detachable reach end which shall be of simple construction, which may be cheaply manufactured and which may also be very quickly assembled.
The invention also aims to generally improve devices of this nature to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
In the embodiment of my invention, I provide a socket which receives one end of the wagon reach and which is provided with a detachable U-shaped clip adapted to cooperate with the end of the socket to form an opening through which the king bolt passes. At the present time it is necessary, when the ordinary construction of reach is used to. unload the wagon and remove the king bolt before a new reach can be substituted for the one in use and my invention is designed to overcome this.
For a complete understanding of my in vention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view taken on the plane of line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the plane of line 4% of Fig. 3.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 1 indicates a reach pole, to the front end of which is secured a socket 2, rectangular in cross section and made solid at its outer end. Bolts 3 pass through openings in the socket and are for the purpose of securing the same to the reach. The outer end of this socket is formed with end opening recesses 4 which are rectangular in cross section and are for the purpose of receiving a U-shaped fastening clip 5. The arms of this clip are provided with alined openings 6 which register with similar openings in the socket 2. A transverse pin 7 passes through these alined openings and is secured therein by a cotter pin 8. It will be noticed that the outer end of the socket 2 is tapered to conform with the shape of the enlarged head of the fastening clip 5. The end of the socket 2 is provided with the vertical groove 9 semicircular in cross section and cooperating with the clip 5 to form a circular opening through which the king bolt 10 passes and holds the socket between the bolsters 11.
It will be seen that my invention makes it possible when a reach breaks to remove the same from the socket 2 without disturbing the king bolt 10. This may be easily and quickly accomplished by removing the bolts 3. If it is thought desirable to remove the reach 1 and socket 2 without disconnecting them it may be done by removing the pin 7 so as to detach the socket from the fastening clip. Either of these operations may be performed without unloading a wagon and this, I consider to be the most important feature of my invention.
/Vhile I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, slight changes in construction may be made without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention.
lVhat I claim is 1. A reach end adapted to be secured to the end of a reach pole and project longitudinally therefrom, said reach end having a solid body portion formed with a pair of longitudinally extending end opening recesses, a fastening clip having parallel arms adapted to be positioned within said recesses, the clip cooperating with the reach end to form an opening for the reception of a king bolt, said reach end and fastening clip being formed with a plurality of trans verse alined openings, and a pin fitted within said openings whereby the fastening clip is secured in position.
