UNITED STATES PATENT orrron.
ARTHUR J. MITTLER, 0F WELLS'ION, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JULIUS G. MI'ITLER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COLLAPSIBLE RECEPTACLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. MITTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVellston, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in collapsible receptacles and has for its prime object the production of a simple and inexpensive basket which shall supplant, at least to a large extent, the well-known chip basket now commonly distributed by grocers.
WVhereas the wooden chip basket is gradually increasing in cost due to the lessening supply of suit-able timber and is expensive to ship and store on account of its size and rigid structure, the basket of my invention is designed to be constructed of any suitable artificial material, such as strawboard, stiffened canvas, or the like, and will be comparatively inexpensive to ship and store by reason of being collapsible.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the basket of my invention as the same ap pears when open and ready for use Fig. 2 a top plan view of the completed basket in its folded condition; and Fig. 3 an end elevation of the receptacle as shown in Fig. 1.
In carrying my invention into practice I provide a blank of any suitable material and of formation adapted to provide a floor or bottom 1, side walls 2 and 3, and ends 4. Disposed at opposite extremities of side wall 2 are inclined scorings 5, the same extending from the upper edge of said wall to a scoring 6 which is disposed in the side walls as well as the ends of the receptacle at a point about an inch above the bottom thereof. Ends i are also provided with scorings 7 and 8 Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 654,136.
10, and disposed in the sides of said handle are oblong slots 11 in which are slidably mounted members 12 having enlarged ends 12, said members adapted to enter the open end 13 of slots 13 when the receptacle is unfolded and thus retain its sides in upright position. The collapse of this receptacle is effected by bending inwardly its ends 4 together with sections 2 of wall 2 defined by scorings 5, and this permits side 3 to fold downwardly upon said ends while side 2 folds over upon side 3, that portion of said sides lying beneath scoring 6 being maintained in substantially vertical position due to the engagement therewith of the ends of handle 10.
lVhile the preferred form of my invention is herein described I do not wish it understood that I proposeto limit myself precisely thereto, and the right is reserved of making such change in the character or form of handle 10 and the means for securing its ends to the receptacle, as well as alterations with respect to the scorings or creases or the shape of slots 13, as may prove expedient or desirable, and without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the following claims.
That I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An article of the character described comprising a foldable receptacle, a handle having its opposite ends pivotally secured to the sides thereof, and a scoring disposed substantially from end to end of said sides above the point of engagement therewith of said handle, whereby said receptacle may be folded without interference from said handle.
2. An article of the character described comprising a foldable receptacle, a handle having its opposite ends pivotally secured to the sides thereof, members slidably engaged with said handle adapted to engage said sides, and a scoring disposed substantially from end to end of said sides above the point of engagement therewith of said handle, whereby said receptacle may be folded without interference from said handle.
3. An article of the character described comprising a foldable receptacle, a handle having its opposite ends pivotally secured to the sides thereof, slots arranged in said sides,
members slidably engaged with said handle In testimony whereof I have aiiixed my adapted to engage said slots, and a scoring signature in presence of two wltnesses.
disposed substantially from end to end of said sides above the point of engagement H MITTLER' therewith of said handle, whereby said rel/Vitnesses: ceptacle may be folded without interference W. KEANE SMALL, from said handle. THOMAS ERSKINE.
