Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 20, 1913.
Application filed July 19, 1912. Serial No. 710,511,
Be it known that I, WALTER E. HADLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coatesville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Holders, of which the following is especification.
The invention relates to a clothes line holder, and more particularly to the class of safetyline holders.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a holder wherein a clothes line will be firmly clamped or held fast so as to avoid the slipping of the line through the holder in event any portion thereofbecomes broken when the line is stretched between spaced walls, posts or other stationary supports, thereby avoiding the dropping of the clothes upon the ground, floor or thelike;
Another object of the invention is the provision of a holder of this character wherein a clothes line can be readily secured therein or detached therefrom and when the said line is secured in the same it will be prevented from slipping or falling from the said holder, should the line become broken at any point throughout its length.
' A further object of the invention is the provision of. a holder of this character which is simple in construction, reliable and eflicient in its purpose, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other'objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and
pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view'of a clothes line, the same being hung in holders each constructed in accordance with the invention. Fi 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the hol er. Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the holder open.
Similar reference characters indicate correspondin views in t e drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals each line holder comprises a base 5, which is in the form of a plate, and is adapted to post, or other-statiom ary support in any desirable manner.
parts throughout the several Integral with or anchored in the post 5 and prO ectmg outwardl therefrom is a hook 6, the bill 7 of which 1s disposed at the upper side thereof. Mounted upon the hook 6 isa clamping jaw comprising spaced cheeks 8 united by means of a finger extension nib 9,
the cheeks being disposed on opposite sides of the hook 6, and connected eccentrically thereto by means of a cross pivot 10, which is passed through the cheeks 8 and the book 6 as" shown.
The cheeks 8 are formed with alining curved line receiving slots 11, the same being inwardly tapered and open through the outer periphery of the said cheeks, so that when a clothes line 12 is engaged in the hook 6, and the clamp is swung inwardly and downwardly the line 12 will be wedged in the slots 11 in the said cheeks 8 thereby firmly gripping said line to prevent the pos sibility of the slipping thereof in the holder. The cheeks 8 are formed on their outer peripheries with alining ratchet teeth 13, in any -one of which is adapted to engage a latch 14 slidably' mounted upon one side of the hook 6, the latch being formed with spaced elongated guide slotsv 15 in which are engaged guide pins 16 the same being fastened in the hook 6, and designed to guide the latch 14 when it is moved into engage ment with or disengaged from the teeth 13 on the clamp. The latch 14 is formed with thereby obviating the possibility of the clothes falling upon the ground or floor.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be clearly understood, and therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is:- V v 1. A device of the class described comprising 'a base, a hook-like member projecting outwardly from the base at right angles thereto, an eccentric having spaced cheeks integrally formed with each other and swingingly connected. to the hook-like member, the said cheeks being provided with alining slots adapted to receive a clothes line when engaged in the hook-like member, a plurality of ratchet teeth formed on the outer peripheries of the cheeks, and catches slidably mounted upon the hooklike member and engageable with the ratchet teeth for locking the eccentric member in adjusted position.
2. A device of the class described comprising a base, a hook-like member projecting outwardly from the base at right angles thereto, an eccentric having spaced cheeks integrally formed with each other and swingingly connected to the hook-like member, the said cheeks being provided with alining slots adapted toreceive a clothes line when engaged in the hook-like member, a plurality of ratchet teeth formed on the outer peripheries of the cheeks, catches slidably mounted upon the hook-like member and engageable with the ratchet teeth for locking the eccentric member in adjusted position, and a finger extension formed on the eccentric member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER E. HADLEY.
