METALLIC TIE AND RAIL-FASTENER.
raise.
i Specification of Letters E'atent. Patented May 20, 1913.
Application filed Itovember 27, 1912. Serial No.- 733,840.
certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Ties and Rail-Fasteners, of which the vfollowingis a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawing .lO
This invention relates. to a metallic tie and rail fastener, and among the principal objectsof my invention are, first, that of providing a strong and durable metallic tie that canbe easily tamped in a roadbed; second,- that of furnishing the tie With novel ra1lchairs and fasteners that" prevent vertical Qstructure of the above type that is highly and lateral displacement of rails mounted upon the tie, and third, that of providing a rollingstock.
. I attain the above and other objects by a mechanical construction that Will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed. -Reference Will now be had to the drawing,
wherein v Figure l is a side elevation of the tie and railfastener, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, Fig. 3 'is a plan of the tie and rail fasteners, Fig. 4 is a similar view of .a tie, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a rail chair.
Further describing my invention in de tail with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout: l'denotes a metallic channel-shaped tie that has the bottom thereof cut away, as at 2 to provide clearance for bolt heads, as will presently appear. The inner side of the bottom of the tie, adjacent to the ends thereof, has
.as at 9 and provided .with longitudinal cushioning strips 10 for rail chairs 11 that serve as inner fasteners. The rail chairs l1 Gopies at this patent may be obtained have cushioning strips 12 ,supporting the base flanges 8 of the rails, and said chairs brace the inner sides of the'rails 7 and are interlocked with the outerrail fasteners by tongues 13 extending into the recesses 9.
The rail chairs 11 have lateral extensions 14 provided with sockets 15 for tie rods 16.
arranged centrally of the tie.
Seated in the top of the tie, intermediate the ends thereof is a to plate'17 that is locked in engagement with the bottom of the tie by vertical bolts 18 and nuts 19. Y The belt heads are arranged .upon the bottom of the tie and said bolts extend through vertical grooves 20' formed in the sides of the extensions 14, alsothrongh 0penings2lprovided therefor inthe top plates 17 and the bottom of the tie; i
From the foregoing it will be observed that the rail chairs and outer fasteners are locked together and held against longitudinal displacement relatively to the tie and that the rails are braced in a manner that prevents the same from tilting or spreading. .lVhat I claim is V In a metallic tie and rail fastener, the combination with rails, of a channel-shaped tie supporting the base flanges of said rails, cushioning blocks. arranged. transversely Within said tie adjacent to the ends thereof, outer rail fasteners arranged upon said blocks .and engaging the outer sides of said rails, cushioning strips carried by said outer rail fasteners, rail chairs arranged in-said tie and bracing the inner sides thereof, said chairs resting upon the cushioning strips of said outer fasteners and having tongues interlocked with said outer fasteners, cushioning strips carried by said chairs and supporting the base fiangesof said rails, tie
rods connecting said rail chairs intermediate the ends of said tie, a top plate ar ranged upon said tie between said rail for five cents each, by addressing the "commissioner of rsteate, Washington, D it. i
