Description
H. F. ROJOHN & w. DICK.
FIRING MECHANISM.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 9, 191a.
Patented May 20; 1913.
I I I INVENTORS J-LIZ'I! Walla ATTORNEY U TTED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY F. ROJ'OHN AND WILLIAM DICK, F GREENOGK, PENNSYLVANIA.
FIRING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 9,1918. Serial No. 741,124.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that we, HENRY F. RoJoHN and WILLIAM DICK, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Greenock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Firing Mechanism, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to. the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a firing mechanism for a trlggerless gun, and more particularly to a mechanism that can be advantageously used in connection with a repeater or what is commonly known 'as a pump gun, or as a matter of fact, in connection with any gun that has a concealed hammer.
The primary object of our invention is the provision of positive and reliable means,
as will be hereinafter set forth, for locking a firing mechanism against accidental action, thereby. preventing accidental discharge of a gun, until such time that the user of the gun positively sets the firing mechanism for action.
Another object of our invention is to provide a safety device for firing arms consisting of comparatively few parts that can be easily assembled and concealed within the stock of gun for locking the gun against action.
' further object of our invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and durable safety device for repeater firing arms that does not impair the appearance of a fire arm or materially increase the. weight thereof.
With the above and other objects in view the invention re ides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing,
' wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a firing mechanism showing the mechanism in a tired position and said mechanism relatively to the stock of a repeater gun, Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the firing mechanism cooked, and Fig. 3' is a cross sectional view of a portion of a stock of a gun showing the firing button.
I Further describing our invention in detail with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout: 1 denotes a. portion of a conventional form of repeater gun that has a hammer 2 pivoted within the gun for striking a firing pin 3, ,said hammer being cocked when the mechanism of the gun is actuated to eject a shell and place another cartridge in position for firing. The pivoted end of the hammer '2 has a shoulder 4. and pivetally connected to the same end of said hammer, as at 5 is a spring actuated plunger 6. The plunger 6 extends lever is adapted to engage the shoulder d of the hammef 2 and hold the hammer cooked or set, as shown in Fig. 2. The release lever is held in engagement with the shoulder 4: by the combined tension of the spring 9 and a leaf spring 12, carried by the stock of the gun and engaging the under side of the release lever- The inner end of the release lever 10 is engaged by a double conical-shaped spring held shiftable member 13 arranged transversely of the stock of the gun. The member 13 has shanks 14 extendin through ofl'set walls 15 of the stock of the gun and said shanks have firing buttons 16 housed in the recesses 17 formed by the ofiset walls 15. Encircling the shanks 14, between the ends of the member 13 and the Walls 15 are coiled compression springs 19. The tension of the springs 19 is sufficient to hold the member 13 where- 'by the release lever 10 will be intermediate the ends thereof. In other words, the release lever will normally engage that portion of' the member 13 of sniall diameter. By pressing inwardly upon either of the firing buttons 16 the release lever is shifted and the hammer 2 released. With a firing button at each side of the stock of the gun,
the gun can be used by right-handed or lefthanded persons. A
Located within the stock of the gun,
adjacent to the inner end of the release lever, is a Z-shaped locking arm 20 that is g ided by the stock of the gun. The outer Patented May 20,1913.
end of the arm 20 has a button 21 to permit of the arm being easily shifted, and the inner end of the arm is adapted to' extend over the inner end of the lever 10. Withthe arm 20 in one position, as shown in Fig. 2, the lever 10 cannot be moved by the member 13, and with the arm 20 in the position shown in Fig. 1, the gun can be fired by pressing either one of the buttons 16.
It is thought that the utility of our invention will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of our invention, we would have it understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such modifications and variations as fall within the scope of the appended claims. What we claim is 2-- 1. In a firing mechanism for guns, a spring actuated hammer, a release lever for holding said hammer cocked, a double conical-shaped spring pressed shiftable member normally engaging said lever for moving said lever to release said hammer and means whereby said member can be shifted through one side or the other,. and
an arm movable above said release lever for locking said lever against movement when said hammer is cooked.
2. In a firing mechanism for guns, a spring actuated hammer, a release lever for holding said hammer cocked," a double conical-shaped spring held shiftable member normally engaging said release lever,
means to. facilitate shifting said member and w means whereby said member can be shifted through one side or the other, and means located above said lever for lockin said leveraga'inst movement when said ammer is cocked.
3. In a firing mechanism for guns, a spring actuated hammer, a release lever for holding said hammer cocked, a double conical-shaped spring held shiftable member normally engaging said release lever, and means to facilitate shifting said member from either one side or the other.
4. In a firing mechanism for guns, the combination with a gun stock, and a spring actuated hammer, of a pivoted release lever arranged in the stock of said gun for holding said hammer cocked, a double conicalshaped member supported by offset portions of the walls of said stock and normally engaging said release lever whereby said lever can be moved out of engagement with said hammer by shifting said member and means whereby said member can be shifted from either one side or the other, and means Within the stock of said gun for restoring said member to its normal position after each actuation thereof.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in the presence of two Witnesses.
