The object of my invention is to provide an improved bag handle attachment, to be used preferably in connection with that type of handle known as a flat or strap handle, of such a construction as to permit the bag handle which is secured to the ring or handle securing means to be moved lengthwise of the bag frame and to fold down into close proximity to the side of the body of the bag.

With the handle fastenings constructed with plain rings as heretofore practised, the trouble has been that when subjected to a strain applied through the handle, the said rings unless soldered would open and come out, and allow the handle to become detached, which trouble is wholly remedied by the construction of my improved ring and base, which are of such a nature as'to reduce the accidental opening or spreading of the ring and its separation from the base, to a minimum.

In carrying out my invention, I make use of the various structures illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 illustrates a side elevation of a bag handle, and frame embodying my invention. Fig. 2 illustrates a side elevation of the handle attachment, detached from both handle and frame. Fig. 3 illustrates a sectional view on lines 00-00 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 illustrates a bottom plan view of my improved base. Fig. 5 illustrates a side elevation of the ring detached from the base before it is secured to the handle.

T provide adjacent to each end of one of the bag frame members a, a chambered metal base 6, secured to the bag frame by means of a pair of integral tongues c inserted through apertures in the bag frame member a and clenched over in any suitable and convenient manner. This is the usual and ordinary method of securing the chambered metal base to the frame.

The chambered base I) as illustrated, is provided upon its top side with a convex portion d and upon both sides with corre sponding alined semi-circular recesses e, the metal adj acent to said recesses and below the convex portion (Z being forced inwardly and toward the center of the base by means of suitable dies, so as to form a circular bearing f to which the ring 9 is pivotally secured and around which it can freely pivot. The ring 9 instead of being formed in the usual manner, is formed as illustrated in the drawings, and is provided at its lower central portion with a supplemental ring it, the diameter of which is slightly greater than the diameter of the bearing f. Formed integrally with and extending outwardly and upwardly from the supplemental ring 72. are the loops h, which together with the supplemental ring h, form the. completed ring 9, which is secured to the handle strap 2'.

The ring 9 is preferably made from wire by means of suitable punches and dies, and is of a shape as illustrated in Fig. 8 of the drawings, the distance of the open part of the supplemental ring 72. being slightly greater than the diameter of the circular bearing f of the base'?), so that the base I) can be readily passed through the open ends of the loops in and into the eye of the supplemental ring it. This construction enables the base 5 with the attached ring 9 to be secured to the bag frame members a, and when so secured, prevents the ring 9 from becoming separated from the base 6.

When it is desired to fasten the handle 71 to the rings 9, it only becomes necessary to pass the ends of the loops it through the strap, and to contract the open end of the supplemental ring 72., by means of a suitable hand tool, as shown in Fig. 3.

The present invention provides a very simple and exceedingly eflicient bag handle attachment, in which the accidental separation of the ring from the base is prevented, and which owing to the cylindrical bearing f formed in the under side of the base 6 and the supplemental ring it formed in the ring 9, will permit the ring to freely swivel in all directions around the bearing f, thereby permitting the handle 2' to be moved lengthwise of the frame and to either side of the same.

I am aware that changes may be made in the several arrangements of the various parts as well as in the details of construction thereof, without departing from the scope of my present invention; hence I do not wish to be limited to the exact arrangements of the parts herein shown and described, as obvious modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.

I claim:

1. A handle attachment for bag frames, comprising a chambered base provided with integral tongues adapted to be secured to a bag frame section, the sides of said base midway of its length being contracted to form a centrally arranged longitudinallycurved tubular bearing extending upwardlyfrom said base, and further provided with a recess, and a handle supporting element provided with a contracted portion, said contracted portion embracing said bearing and passing through said recess, and an open loop extending from the contracted portion to prevent separation of said supporting element and base.

2. A handle attachment for bag frames, comprising a chambered base provided with integral tongues adapted to be secured to a bag frame section, the longitudinal sides of said chambered base midway of its length being contracted to form a centrally-arranged upwardly-curved tubular bearing, and further provided with a recess and a handle supporting element provided with a contracted portion, said contracted portion embracing said bearing and passing through said recesses and an open loop extending from the contracted port-ion to prevent separation of said supporting element and base.

3. A handle attachment for bag frames, comprising a chambered base adapted to be secured to a bag frame section, the longitudinal sides of said chambered base midway of its length being contracted to form a centrally-arranged upwardly extending tubular bearing, and further provided with a recess, and a handle supporting element provided with a contracted portion, said contracted portion embracing said bearing FRANZ A.
