Description
W. G. BEAR 6: K. G. HURLBUT;
DUST SHIELD FOR HUBS.
- APPLICATION FILED APR. 1, 1912. I 1,0 1,30 Patented May'13, 1913.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILSON G. BEAR AND KENNETH C. HURLBUT. OF MONROE, ,W'ISGONSIN.
DUST-SHIELD FOR HUBS.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILSON G. BEAR and KENNETH C. HURLBUT, citizens of the United States, residing at Monroe, in the county of Green, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Shields for Hubs; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to dust shields and has for an object to provide a device of this character which will house the inner end of the hub and prevent the admission of dust, dirt and other foreign matter to the spindle, and will furthermore be provided on the lower side with opposing edges which scrape the grease, mud and other foreign matter from the hub ferrule and permit of the same dropping oif from the ferrule .without obstructions.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel clip for detachably securing the dust shield to vehicle axles of various slzes.
With the above objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification :Figure 1 is aside elevation of the device applied. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the device. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional View taken on the line 4l4 Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 55 Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the clip.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, the dust shield is shown to comprise a disk 10 having a central slot 11 opening through the bottom edge and ex tending past the center of the disk, this slot being adapted to snugly receive the vehicle axle near the hub. The disk is designed to Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented May 13, 1913. Serial No. 687,709.
abut the inner end of the hub ferrule 12. Formed integral with the disk is an elongated arched shank 13 which is designed to straddle the axle and to conform as closely as possible to the shape of the axle.
Extending outwardly and substantially horizontally from the periphery of the disk is a substantially cylindrical shield 14 formed of spring metal for imparting to the shield the necessary resiliency to enable it to conform to the contour of the hub and to accommodate itself to the movements and varying positions of the hub. A slot 15 is formed in the bot-tom of the inner end of the shield, and furthermore the bottom of the shield is cut away on opposite sides of the slot, the edges of the cutaway portion being curvilinear in outline as shown at 16 and acting as wipers for wiping the dust, dirt and other foreign matter on the outside of the hub toward the outer end of the hub and away from the inner end where the .spindle enters.
The slot 15 permits of the shield being slipped on to the axle without removing the wheel, and the edges 17 of the slot form confronting scrapers on the bottom of the hub ferrule to scrape grease, mud, etc., from the ferrule and permit of the same gravitating from the ferrule without obstructions.
The clip for attaching the device to the axle consists of a piece of flat metal 18 having a straight portion 19 adapted to fit along the bottom of the axle and having an arched portion 20 adapted to straddle the shank 13 of the shield. A substantially V- shaped catch 21 is pivotally secured to the bottom 19 of the clip, and a substantially oblong eye 22 is pivotally secured to one leg of the catch as shown at 23, the eye being adapted to be engaged in the hooked terminal 2 1 of the arched portion of the clip. When the catch is rocked on its pivot so that the free leg contacts with the bottom of the clip, the eye will be held snugly in said hooked extremity and when the catch is rocked outwardly on its pivot the eye will be removed from said hooked extremity to release the clip.
What is claimed, is
A securing clip for dust shields including an arched member adapted to straddle the shield and having a straight portion In testimony whereof, We affix our signaadapted to extend along the bottom of an tures, in presence of two Witnesses.
axle a substantially V-shaped catch pivot- 7 T ally secured to said straight portion, and a ILSOL BEAR T T closed eye pivotally secured to the inter- KEBLETH HURLBUT mediate portion of one of the catch legs and Witnesses: adapted to engage yieldingly the free end of RAY E. BALTZER, said arched portion. NETTIE E. BALTZER.
