FRONT HEAD FOR DRILLS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. W'INKEL- MEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beacon Hill, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Front Heads for Drills, of which the follow ing is a specification.
The invention relates to drills, particularly power drills, for use in rock drilling and the like, and has for an object to provide a front head therefor.
The invention embodies, among other features, a head consisting of two sections arranged to encircle the piston rod with one of the sections in connection with the cylinder of the drill, the mentioned head being formed in two sections in order that one of the sections can. slightly move on the other section to take up the stress produced when the drill strikes a glancing blow, it being well known that when a head is made in a single piece, as is most usually the case, the shock occasioned by the drill striking a glancing blow often fractures or entirely wrecks the head or cylinder. By forming the head in two sections, one section being movable on the other, the strain occasioned by the drill striking a glancing blow will be taken up by the slight movement of one of the sec tions and in this manner the fracture of any part of the head, side rods or cylinder is prevented.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the head showing the same in applied position; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the sections of the head; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view looking at one end of the other section.
Referring more particularly to the views, use is made of two sections constituting a head 10, one of the said sections being larger than the other and comprising a body 11 adapted to encircle the usual piston rod 12 of a drill 13, the other section constituting Specification of Letters Patent.

a seat member 14 forming a seat for the body 11, the said seat member being also adapted to encircle the piston rod 12 and having connection with the usual cylinder casing 15 of the drill 13.
The inner face of the body 11 is provided with an annular groove 16 and similarly the inner face of the seat member 14 is provided with an annular groove 17, a packing 18 being interposed between the body 11 and piston rod 12 and having a circular flange 19 thereof extending within the annular groove 16 of the body 11, a second packing 20 provided with a circular flange 21, being interposed between the seat member 14 and the piston 12, with a portion of the packing extending within the end of the body 11 and having the flange 21 thereof extending within the annular groove 16 of the body 11, the mentioned packing 20 being provided with a second annular flange 22 which is received in the annular groove 17 of the seat member 14 as shown.
By referring to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the inner end of the scat member 14 has connection with the cylinder casing 15 and the outer end of the seat member is recessed to form a seat 23 to receive a circular flange 24 formed on the inner end of the body 11. A collar is preferably arranged to encircle the body 11 and may be provided with ears having rods or other means extended therethrough, whereby the body 11 will be held in proper position relatively to the piston 12, this construction being found in well known types of drills.
As mentioned heretofore, when the drill strikes a glancing blow on rocks or other obj ects, the side stress or transverse strain produced will be substantially taken up by the head 10 which, formed on the body 11 and seat member 14, will permit of the body 11 moving slightly on the seat member 14, whereas if the head were made in a single piece as is most usually the case, the strain occasioned by the drill striking a glancing blow would tend to fracture either the head 10, the cylinder casing 15 or both, thus necessitating the provision of a new head and sometimes the provision of an entirely new machine or side rods.
