WOODBURY STORER. HOVUOF CINCINNATI, HIO.
Letters Patent No. 106,163, dated Aug/ust 9, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALANCES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of thev lame.
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
My invention belongs to the class of weighing devices, such as steelyards and modifications ot' the Roman balance or scales, in which amovable counterpoise or poise-weight, or both of' these, are substituted for the piece-weights ofthc 'pairof scales or equal balance.
against a movable connterpoisc on the long arm, in
my device the article is placed at the remote part of a properly-graduated long arm, and the weight ascertained by a movable poise-weight ranging the long arm toward the fnlcrum, the effect of' such operation being a virtual substitution for the poise-weight of a load having a long leverage against a cmnmon constant counterpoise with a short leverage.
General Description with Reference In the Drawing.
The drawing is a perspective view oi' one form of my invention, in which is shown an unequal balance, having a long arm, A, and a short arm, A', with the fixed f'ulcrum B resting on the support G, which is adjusted to and n'laintained in a vertical position by the set-screw legs J J J, the plumb-bob K, thc plumbline L, and the tixed pin 7c.
The long arm, A, and its dependencies are counterpoised by the constant counterpoise y, and the adjustable constant counter-poise G, with its screw H.
The vibration of the bea-m A A' is limited by the arms oi' the stop M, and the degree of vibration is shown by the index I over the graduated are N.
'Ihe scale-pan D, having its center of gravity below the long arm A, is freely suspended trom the knifeedge or pivot E, and the long arm A is marked with counter-numbered equal graduations, l1 to b, over which the movable poise-weight r' ranges toward the fulcruln 1%.
In the construction ot"my balance the constant counterpoise or counterpoises may be fixed, or movable, or` adjustable on the short arm A', in any form that c will serve to counterpoise the long arm A and its dependencies, C D E. The form of unequal balance shown is not preferred, but is convenient.
Tile whole beam A A' or the lonW arm A mav be e v a l made to` combine lightness with bulk and rigidity by taking a strip ot sheet metal, cut to the right length and about twice the required width, marking it by means of a graduating engine, such as is used in making rules for measurement, stamping the figures so as to be read 0n bot-h' sides of a centerline, and then binding or folding the strip lengthwise, so that a cross- `section will resemble an inverted U or V.
. The graduations l) to b may be in lineswith or without notches, in any number or degree of separation, the poise-weight c being subsequently adapted to them, and made citherto slide or hang, as may be preferred.
'lhc following are some of the'advantages obtained by my invention:
My balance has a prepoiulerating power by the operation ot' the load upon the long arm, so that a given variation from the true weight heilig thus rendered more visible, a proportionate accuracy is obtainable.
Anothe advantage is simplicity ol' construction in comparison with the common equal balance, which latter is known to require great care and skill in equalizing the parts and in adjusting the t'ulcruln exact-ly midway from two pivots for the support of two sealepans, and similar care and exaetness are requisite in various forms of unequal balances, but in making 'my balance the fulerum B may at once be fixed near the counterpoise, the pivot E made fast at the end ofthe graduated long arm A, the scale-pan suspended, and then the poise-weight c be increased or diminished in weight until, from equilibrium at zero, b, it can be moved to the limit ot' its range, at b', and record the proper number of weights then indicated, as required in I), to restore equilibrium. The intermediate weights and their fractions are included in the one adjustment, and sure to bel-ight it' the graduations are equal and the standard weight a true one.
The capacity or weighing power may be increased by counterpoisc-weigl1ts added` to the short arm, either directly upon the arm or suspended from it.
Claim.
I claim as my inventionrlhe combination ot" the i'eely-suspemled scale-pan D, the pivot E, the counter-ninnbered equal graduations b to b', and the movable poise-weight c, with the long arm A of an unequal balance or scales, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
