SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,691, dated March 3, 1891.
Application filed October 30,1890. Serial No. 3691843 (No model) To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, Gnsrnvn LUNDBERG, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Logan, in the county of Cache and Territory of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inXX/Ieighing-Scales; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings,andtolettersofreferencemarked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in weighing-scales.
The object of the invention is to provide a weighing-scale having an oscillating indicator for ounces and fractions thereof operated by the main scale-beam, which carries an adjustable weight and acts upon a series of supplemental weights, whereby the overweight will be indicated when the beam is overbalanced7 as well as the weight of vessels placed in the scale-pan ascertained before setting the sliding weight carried by the main scale-beam; and the invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, Figure I is a perspective view of a weighing-scale constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line c w of Fig. 2, and Fig. l is a sectional view on the line ly y of Fig. 2.
A refers to the base to which Ithe supporting-frames are attached, said supportingframes consisting of nprights B B7 upon which the main beam Ois fulcrnmed by the employment ofthe usual knife-edge bearings. Upon the supporting-frame between the uprights B B is located a bifurcated bearing b, through which passes a pin for pivotally connecting thereto bars d and d. At the opposite end ol the base A are secured standards E E, which carry at their upper ends a plate F, having suitable gage-marks thereomsaidgagemarks commencing at zero and being spaced to represent fractions of ounces. Over each face of theplate F passes the end of a bifurcated pointer G, which is carried by a weighted crank-arm Il, j ournaled between suitable supports I and I, the end of said crank-arm havingaprojecting pin 7L, which enters a slot in a vertically-movingbasket J, hung upon the end of the scale-beam G, to move between the side pieces I and I2 of the frame which contains the series of weights. This basket J is connected at its central lower portion by a pivotpin to the bar (Z, hereinbefore referred to, and at one side extends the projection having a horizontal slot into which passes the pin 7L, carried by the arm II, so thatas this basket moves up and down the pointer G will move over the scale-plateF. When the pointer G is to one side of the Zeromark,it will indicate that the scales are not properly balanced, and as it moves toward the opposite end it will indicate the fractions of ounces as positioned. The arm II is weighted on the side opposite the extended portion to properly balance.
Between the vertical frames I and I2 are hung a series of weights l, which are of less width than the distance between the side pieces of the basket J, and each ot' these weights is provided with pins 7o le, which enter recesses fel in the side pieces I and I2, these recesses being of diminishing depth, as shown in Fig. The weight II, which is supported in the long slot, is positioned immediately above the side frame of the basket, but not in contact therewith when the scales are properly balanced. To prevent longitudinal movement of the weights K, I attach to the side pieces I and I2 plates i?, against which the ends of the pins 7a will contact and prevent such movement. By providing V-shaped slots i friction contact with the edges of said slots is avoided when the pins rest upon the basket J.
The portion of the weighing-scales thus lar described may be used for postal or other scales without the other parts of my invention, as when a light weight is placed in the scale-pan to overbalance the beam the ounces and fractions thereof will be properly indicated by the pointer upon the graduated plate F.

The beam C is vfulcrumed upon the supports l B, and upon -thc short end -is hung a frame L, having a hollowed-out central portion and vertical open-ended slots, through which the pivot-pins attached to the side pieces pass.
The upper portion of this frame L carries the usual pan M, and to the lower end is secured a depending bifurcated pin, to which the bar d is pivotally secured. To the upper edges of the side pieces of the beam C is secured a plate N, provided with a longitudinal slot n, adjacent to which is a scale, and through this slot passes a screw m, which engages with a bar C at its lower end and carries an indicator m at its upper end. The bar C is secured at one end to a sliding weight IV, secured to a top plate c, which extends over the edges of the beams C to hold the weight movable thereon, and said weight W is of a sufficient-size to counterbalance the frame L and parts attached thereto, which are located beyoud the fulcrum of the bars C C when the weight XV and plate c, attached to said weight, abut against the plate N. The bar C passes through an opening in the depending` wall or transverse guide c', located at one end of the plate N, and this bar C is preferably made u p of a slotted tube, within which lies a bar O, having notches o for engagement with the lower portion of the wall or guide c', and beyond this plate the iiat bar O is given a halfturn to provide a iiat spring portion, the tendency of which is to throw the outer end of the bar downward to hold the notches therein in contact with the opening in the wall or transverse guide c. The inner end of the springbar O is screwed into or otherwise secured to the weight, and saidweight is adjusted by said bar, which can be moved sol that the notches therein will engage with the lower portion of the opening in the wall or transverse guide c.
By the use of the improved sc ale hereinbefore described it will be readily seen that by properly moving the weight WV, which is attached to the plate c, the edges of which Aoverlap or lie over the upper edges-of the bars C C and slide thereon, which is done by raising the spring-bar and drawing 4or pushing the same until the indicator m is at the proper point, the weight will be held by the springbar in 'the position in which it is placed,and the indicator m will indicate the number of pounds orfractions thereof which the pan will receive before depressing the main beam. In weighing goods after the weight and indicator are set, as described, when the scale-beam is depressed slightly, the pan will contain the exact weight of material indicated by the pointer m', and ifoverweight is placedin the pan the beam will be further depressed and the vertically-movable weights K will coact with the beam and indicate the excess or overweight. In handling ordinary groceries the dealer by the use of my improved scale can ascertain exactly the amount of overweight which they give the purchaser. 'I hese scales made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of my invent-ion as indicated in the claims. Y
Having thus'described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a weighing-scale, of a main beam, a support pivoted to one end thereof, a sliding weight W, and a 'bar O for adjusting the sliding weight, said weight having attached thereto a slotted tube carrying an indicator which moves over a scale-plate attached to the beam, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in aweighing-scale,'of the pivoted beam C, having a slotted scaleplate, a movable weight carrying a slotted tube and a locking-bar O, and a transverse Y guide or wall having an openin g through which the slotted tube and locking-bar pass, said locking-bar having notches, substantially as set forth. 3. In a weighing-scale, the combination of a main beam consisting of parallel side pieces suitably fulcrumed, and a pan-carrying frame through which the tube C and locking-bar pass, said pan-carrying trame bei-ng pivo'tally attached to the side pieces of the 'beam and provided with a link or bar d, connecting the same with the base-frame, substantially as set forth. The combination, in aweighing-scale, of the pivoted beam C, having a movable sliding weight and means for adjusting and holding the same, aslotted scale-plate over which the indicator passesa pan-supporting frame hung upon the side pieces of the beam and connected tothe base by a bar d, and a basket hung upon the opposite end of the beam, said basket being located beneath a series of verticallymovable weight-s and provided with a slotted bar with which the arm of an oscillating pointer engages, substantially as set forth.
5. In combination with a main beam C and attachments therefor, the vertical supports I and I2, having slots for supporting a series ot' vertically-moving weights, and a basket or frame located beneath said weights and pivotally attached to theend of the main beam, said basket being adapted to operate an indicator, substantially as set forth.

In combination with a weighing-scale constructed substantially as shown, standards attached to the same base and carrying,v a graduated plat e, a pivoted pointer adapted to move in proximity thereto, and means for connectin g the same to a inovable basket suspended from the scale-beam, substantially as set forth.
