JOSEPH I-I. GAY, 0F NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
HIDE-SPLITTING MACHINE.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. GAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hide-Splitting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to hide-splitting machines, and more particularly to that described in my pending application, Serial No. 671,021, led January 13th, 1912. In said machine, I employ a moving support below the hideand a moving web which passes under presser blocks above the hide, the edges of said presser blocks being rounded to produce a clearance of sufficient width to permit of the adjustment of the splitting blade in close proximity to the line of maximum compression of the hide between said presser blocks and lower support. I have found in practice, that when the face of the presser block which is met by the enter ing edge of the horizontally moving hide makes a large angle to the plane of the hide, the upper surface of the hide is retarded more than the lower surface which rests on the rotating roll. Hence, there is a tendency to form ridges on said upper surface and to stretch and strain the same, which injures the even quality of the hide and impairs accurate splitting. My present invention prevents this difficulty, through the conformation of the presser block hereinafter described.
The accompanying drawings are vertical sections taken through the presser block, hide, web and supporting roll.
In Figure l the hide is shown as just meeting the web and roll. In Fig. 2 the hide has entered between web and roll, and the spliting is in progress.
The drawings are made on an enlarged scale so as to show the relative positions of the operating parts, under the two conditions stated.
Similar numbers and letters of reference indicate like parts, and on said parts appear Specification of Letters Patent.

21 is the presser block; 23 is the carrying rod therefor; 3 is the gage or supporting roll; 9 is the splitting blade; 33 is the traveling web; S is the hide, and o, c indicates the maximum line of compression, all as fully described in my application aforesaid. The lower edge 22 of the block is made also as described in said application, so that en the delivery side of the compression line c, c there is sufficient clearance to allow the knife edge to be set very close to or at the compression line, the inclined face A of the block then making any suitable angle to the horizontal plane of movement of the hide. On the entrance side of the compression line c, c, the inclined face B of the block is made at a less angle to said horizontal plane, which angle is to be such that when the advancing edge C of the hide meets the web lying flat against face B, as indicated at D, Fig. 1, the upper surface oit' the hide will not be checked or retarded, and so caused to bank up into ridges or become stretched, but, on the contrary, will pass gradually under the block, as indicated by the curved contour at E, Fig. 2. By reason of this gradual entrance, the hide becomes gradually compressed, and the presser block as gradually rises, finally taking a position substantially as shown in F ig. Q, which is determined by the resiliency of the block, supports and the conlpressibility ofthe hide. I find in practice, that even with soft and thick hides, or with green hides, this construction el'l'eetually prevents the ridging or straining of the upper surface of the hide, and permits of its being presented true and [lat to the blade.
I claim:
A hide-splitting machine, comprising a splitting blade, a moving support, a moving web, a presser block having an edge bearing on said web to compress said hide between said web and said support, and inclined c onverging faces meeting at said edge; the said edge heilig rounded to produce a clearance of sufficient Width to permit of the adjust- In testimony whereof I have alfixed my' ment of said blade in close proximity tl the signature in presence of two Witnesses.
line of maximum compression of said ide,
and the inclined face of said block on the JOSEPH H' GAY entrance side being disposed at a less angle Witnesses:
to a horizontal plane than the inclined face GERTRUDE T. PoRTER of said block 0n the delivery side. MAY T. MCGARRY.
