Y CORNELIUS B. coRcoRAN, or'NEwYoRx, N. Y., AssIGNon. To UNnERwoon 'rYPE- 'Y www'.
l`To all 'whom zt'may concern: Be it-kr1own that I, CORNELIUs B. Conco- RAN, a citizen 'ofthe United States, residing f in the borough o:E Bronx, cityof New York', in the county of New 'York and StateA of New York, haveinvented certain'new and useful,Improvementsl in Type-Writing.. Ma- 'chines',.of -whiclithe following is a 4 specifica- -'tion.'." '-310 Thisinvention relates to a guide such as frequently lused as'an attachment.for a ltypewriter, coperating -wlth the platen to hold AThe object of theLiliven't-ion is to provide -imprdvedmeans f r'securir 1g'this guide in v lace, andalso to construct-it so that 1t can be' readily attachedfor detached.

This l View lalso indicates the platen and guide l rollers, andshows a'card being applied4 to the. platen. Fig. 5 isay vertical section sim lar to Fig. 4, but showing the partswith the guidefwire removed. Fig- 6 is a perspective .showing the wire holder .removed from the segment. Fig. 7 is a 'rear elevation` of the wire holder and type-bar guide removed.
I have illustrated the attachment as applied to' an- Underwood front strike type-- y writ-ing machine, in which the usual type segment 1 is secured to a segment bracket 2 just` in 'frontof, and below the platen v3. The usual rollers 4 and 5 run ont-he under side of the platen tc guiderthe paper or card 6. 'e

and are formed. with forward offsets or bends 10 from which the materialextends upwardly to form a bifurcated tongue 11, and this tongue bears lightly against the platen, and is substantially tangent thereto.
' The Shanks' 8 have notches 12, which may be on their rear'sides; with these Shanks I provide a holder, which may be;v in the form of a clutch or' clip' 13, clearly illustrated in Fig. 6, and'adaptedl to engage saidl notches. This wire holder is preferably formed of sheet metal, vand reand in connection sents an elongated middle portion or sadle 14, to rest-on the segment between the Shanks 48. y
At the ends of the saddle and on the 'rear edge thereof, the sheet metal is bent downand upwardly to form depending the wire to the segment. The rear members of these' bows are formedwithl laterally extending ears 17, which are bent forwardly at their lower edges to form plates or shoes 18, to lie upon the upper edge of the segment. In these shoes or plates 18 are formed .slots 19, preferably extending forwardly and rearwardly, and through these slots .the Shanks 8 are passed downwardly when the guide is being attached. The forward ends of plates 18 are bent up to form finger pieces `of the guide. The usual pocket 2 between the bar 2 and segment 1 is closed above by a ribbon guide guard 21 attached by screws .22 setin open slots 23. Opposite the loops or springs 16. the forward edge of the guard 21 is cut away, so as to formthroats or gaps 24,
through which the into the pocket.
T he .foot 25a of the type-bar guide' extends over the saddle 14 and secures the4 holder 13, and theholder is centered and' kept from. shifting longitudinally bya tab 15 which 25b in the type-bar guide, as ,shown in -F-ig. 7. This insures alinement between the slots 19 and the sockets 7.
The .resiliency of the .bows or springs 16 springs 16 extend down tends to force the locking shoes 18'4 fori wardly, and hold them in the position in which they are indicated ment 1, two oppositely disposed sockets 7.
ar brouglit into alinement '1 4. In a'typewriting machine, in combinawith the `sockets 7. The Shanks 8'can then be inserted in ythe sockets, and upon releasing the shoes, 'the' rear edge of the slots will en age with a pair of thenotches 12.
en desired, the'wire frame may vbe readily-removedi By providing a plurality of notches 12, the attachment of the Wire guide is facilitated, thefshoes being permitted-t0 ergage the first pair ofnotches with which they aline. I Vhen the wiregiiide 9 is notin place, the
and 4erasings from .clogging 'up the' sockets. Having thus described my invention, I claim:
