LANTERN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1913.
Application filed February 9, 1912. Serial No. 676,626.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR D. CRAIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lamar, in the county of Barton and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Lantern, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lanterns.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a lantern in which the chimney and its supporting structure may be conveniently raised with respect to the burner.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the chimney may be raised with respect to the burner, and independent of its supporting structure which is held in sliding relation with the lantern ase.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and F 3 is a detail view of one of the latch members.
In the drawings, 10 designates the lamp base which forms the oil receptacle, said base being provided with a plurality of vertically extending supports 11 and 12. The supports 11 and 12 are embraced by vertically moving sleeves 14 and 15 which support the hood structure 16 and the handle 17. A coiled spring 18 is arranged in each of the sleeves 14 and 15, said spring being interposed between the end portion of the vertical standard which is disposed within said sleeves and the plate 19 which is arranged in each of said sleeves. The sleeves 14 and 15 are provided intermediate their ends with a slot 20 which when the chimney is in its normal position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, registers with a notch 21 formed in the standards 11 and 12. Secured to each of the sleeves 14 and 15 is a latch member 24., shown in detail in Fig. 3, consisting of a wire strand bent intermediate its ends and provided with the inwardly disposed projection 25, the terminals 26 of the strand being secured to the sleeve, the projection 25 extending within the slot 20 formed in the sleeve and entering the notch 21 formed in the standard. It will thus be noted that the sleeves 14 and 15 will be maintained against movement with respect to the standards 11 and 12. It will be noted that in order to raise the standards the latch member 24 may be moved out of the slot 20, the sleeve then being free to slide upon said standards. By this construction, it will be noted that the hood and chimney supporting structure may be conveniently raised for the purpose of cleaning or lighting the lamp.
The chimney 27 is supported at its base by the plate 28, said plate being provided with a pair of braces 29 which embrace the chimney. The yoke 30 is secured to this plate, said yoke consisting of two strands of wire, bent to embrace the burner 32, the terminals 34 of the strands extending within a housing 35 which is supported by each of the sleeves 1 1 and 15 adjacent their base, the coiled spring 36 being interposed between the upper wall of the housing and the terminals to normally maintain said terminals in contact with the lower wall of the housing, the chimney in this manner being held firmly in contact with the burner. It will be noted, however, that the chimney may be raised without imparting movement to the sleeves 14c and 15, by moving the yoke against the tension of the springs 36, the upper end of the chimney sliding within the hood 1G.
The many advantages of an adjustment of this character will be clearly apparent, as it will be noted that the chimney may be moved in two distinct ways with respect to the supporting base of the lamp, the chimney being free to move either with the hood supporting structure or capable of movement without the structure. It will also be noted that a device of this character may be easily and economically manufactured and the various parts readily assembled.
What is claimed is A lantern, including a hood support having two depending sleeves, a base, two vertical standards carried by the base and telescopically engaging the sleeves, a resilient connection between each sleeve and standard, and tivo resilient latch members for locking the sleeves and standards against extension.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing asmy own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR D. CRAIG.
