IMPRovm/ IENT 1N SPINNINGRING.
The `Schedule referred toin these Letters Patent and-making part of the saaie.
To all persons to whom.' these presents may come:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. DRAPER, of Hopedale, ofthe county ot Worcester, of the State-.of Massachusetts, have made a new and useful invention having reference tothe Rings and their Supporters of `Ring and Traveler Spinning-Frames; and-I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specitication, and represented in theaccom- ""panying drawing, of whichr Figure l is a top view, and Figure 2 a transverse section of a ring, ring-rail, and ring-supporter, exhibiting the latter as constructed in accordance with my invention.
`consisting of au annulus split or cut entirely through `at one part of its circumference rebated to receive the ring, and formed to enter the socket of the ring-rail, and with a shoulder to rest on. such rail, and to be held in place in the railand sprung upon the ring by a screw screwed into the rail, was not new, and thereiore I make no claim thereto as my invention.
In carrying out my invention or improvement, I employ a rebated annulus to support the ring, whether such -ring has two races or one, and instead of making cylindrical the part which enters the ring-rail, I make it tapering or conical, and I make down'in the supporter from its top, a distance of about two-thirds of its altitude, one or more sa-w-kerfs or vertical cuts,
to contract upon the ring,.while such supporter may be forced down into its socket in the ring-rail.
By this construction of the supporter, the-cuts being arranged radially thereof', the screw in thev rail, if used, simply performs the function of holding the supporter in the rail, and preventing its displacement by any ofthe ordinary operationsA ot' spinning.
W'here thescrewis used for contract-ing a slotted holder, and there-by confining the ring thereto, it'tends to deeentralize the'ring with respect 'to the spindle, while, with my improvement, tlhe socket in the rail being drilled so as to be vconcentric with the spindle, the ring will remain so, since the ring will beheld firmly by the pressure upon all the sides of the holder by the outside of the .socket Iin the rail, so that the holder and ring, if well constructed, will be concentric with the said socket and the spindle.
In the drawingv A denotes the ring-rahfB, .the ring, and C, the ring-carrier or supporter, abeing the tapering or conical shank or part to enter the circular socket b ofthe rail B.-
rlhe radial cuts or saw-kerfs made in .the ringcari-ier or supporter, are represented at o e c as carried `down from the top of the supporter through its shoulder d, and down into the conical Shanks nearly to its bottom.
The rebated ring-supporter C, provided with the conical shank, and with one or more ents or kerfs, 'c c e, arranged in such supporter, substantially as hereinbet'ore described.'
