To all whom, it may concern Beit known that I, LARS A. LARSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elgin, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Leveler and WVeed-Gatherer for Cultivators, of which the following, when taken in connection with the drawing accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a full and complete description, sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to which it pertains to understand, make, and use the same.

This invention relates to a device which is removably attached to cultivators; and the object of the invention is to obtain means whereby as a cultivator is drawn over a field the weeds which are uprooted will be gathered and carried along with the device until the same are deposited by the operator of the cultivator; and further, to obtain means whereby the dirt which is disturbed bythe cultivator will be leveled and left free from the weeds which have been removed therefrom.

A further object of the invention is to obtain a device of the character named which will be simple in construction, easily removed from the cultivator to which it is at tached, easily set back on said cultivator and quickly adjusted for the desired use thereof, durable, not likely to get out of order, and readily manipulated by the operator of the cultivator.

In the drawin referred to Figure l is a top plan view 0' the principal part of the frame of a cultivator removed from the axle, tongue and seat bar, with a device embodying this invention attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a cultivator with a device embodying this invention attached thereto. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of a cultivator, with the device embodying the invention attached thereto, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the parts of the frames which are illustrated in Fig. 1, with the weed gathering frame adjustably raised.

A reference letter applied to a given part is used to designate said part throughout the several figures of the drawing wherever the same appears.

A is the frame of a cultivator, and B, B, are the shovels of the cultivator.

C is the axle and D, D, the carrying wheels of the cultivator.

E, E, are the frames of a device embodying this invention.

F is a curved metal plate, which is bolted to the forward end of a frame of the device and which is engageable, (by means of the curved end,) with the cross bar of cultivator frame A.

G is a bar which is rigidly attached to frame E, and extended out from said frame to a point above or over one of the members of frame A, and H is a screw threaded bolt which is vertically mounted in bar G, so that the lower end thereof rests on the frame A, or on one of the members of said frame. Adjustability of the bolt H in bar G is obtained by cutting a screw thread thereon and making a correspondingly screw threaded hole in said bar G; and saidbolt is retained in an adjusted position by means of the set nut it. As the bolt H is screwed down into the bar G the rear end of the frame E is raised (as is illustrated in Fig. 4), the forward end of said frame remaining hooked to one of themembers of frame A,as described.

I, I, are shovels attached to the rear end of the frame E. These shovels I are, therefore, raised or lowered relative to the shovels B, B, of the cultivator by the adjustment of the bolt II.-

J is a handle attached to frame E, and by means of which the operator of the cultivator can, at any time, raise the frame E to brin the shovels I, out of the ground.

Vi hen the cultivator frame A is raised by the operator, as in turning around at the ends of rows, the frames E of this device are raised therewith, by means of the bar G and bolt I-I, (because the lower end of said bolt rests on frame A), and at other times the frame of this device may be raised by the handle J, as the bolt 11 is then simply lifted from said frame A. It will be observed that the shovels B, B, are broader than the shovels I, I, and that said shovels I are so disposed as to run between the furrows which are raised by the shovels B, but back of the same. It will also be noticed that although I show two frames E said frames may be joined togther and the making of two frames is for the purpose of lessening the labor of lifting them to discharge the weeds gathered thereby and to permit more frequent discharge of the weeds on one side of the cultivator than on the other, when desired.

The operation of the device is,-as the cultlvator is driven over a field and the land turned into furrows with the weeds in a substantially horizontal position the teeth vator frame.

I claim;

1. A cultivator frame provided with shovels and with a seat, m combination with an additional frame, said additional frame provided with means to removably attach it to the cultivator frame, shovels on said additional frame, said shovels alined in a row and positioned to be back of and between the first named shovels when said frames are attached together, means to adjustably raise the rear end of the additional frame and means to maintain said additional frame in an adjusted position, means to. change said additional frame from an operative to an inoperative position independently of the operative position of the cultivator frame, the connection between the frames being such that when the cultivator frame is raised the additional frameis also raised.

2. A cultivator frame provided with a horizontal. bar, shovels on said frame, an

additional frame, a curved plate attached to the forward end of the additional frame and removably attachable to the horizontal bar, said additional frame movable from an operative to an inoperative position independently of the operative position of the cultivator frame, a vertically mounted screw threaded bolt in the additional frame, said bolt positioned so that the lower end thereof rests on the cultivator frame, a lock nut on said bolt, shovels on said additional frame and ahandle to said additional frame, the said shovels alined in a row and positioned so that the shovels on the additional frame are behind and between the shovels on the cultivator frame.
