Description

N. PETERS. PHOT0-UTHDGHAPMER. WASHINGTON D C tiene can.
4WILLIAM OLEMSON, 0F MIDDLEIIOWN, NEW YQRK.
Letters Patent N 106,123, Ztl/ted Auf/ust 9, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-HANDLE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To whom it mag/ concern;
Be it known that `I, WILLIAM Oneinrsoiv, of Mid'- dletown,`in the county of Orange, in the State of NewYork, have invented a new and improved Mode of Attaching Handlesto-Cross-cut Saws, of which the following is a specification,
. My invention is designed to improvel and simplify the one patentedto me June 22, 1869; and
It consists of' a handle and its attendant ldevices, whereby the handle is firmly attached to the saw.
To enable those skilled inthe art Ato make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of'the handle, and theA devices by whichthe handle is attached to 'the saw;
Figure 2 represents a'section ot' a saw with'the lmndlevattached; and
Figure 3 is aside and top view ot' the notched nut or block. l
A represents an ordinary wooden handle, having on its lowerenda ferrule, C, and also a hole, a., run ning longitudinally to about two-thirds, more or less, of its length, to admit the shank aot screw-bolt B,
` and having a mortise in its side, to admit a nut, a",
that receives the screw' part of the shank a.
Bis a screw-holt, having a slot, h, that receives the en d of the saw'.
B represents a small portion of a cross-ont saw.
(Ll is an ordinary fel-rule put on the end ot the han die A, to secure it from splitting. v
I) is a notched clamp-nut or block, having a holev in its center tin'oughavhich screw-bolt B freely passes.
This nut `is interposed between the ferrule Cjon handle A and the saw in slot b of the screw-bolt B, and is free to turn or slide thereon.
Ou the face, 01j that part of the nut next. the saw,J
are out notches, d, opposite each other, ou radial lines, which tit closely upon thetback the-saw, of l whatever shape or taper there maybe to thesaw.
e is a wooden plug, which is fitted" in the mortise A, and, when shaved down to be Lsmooth-with the handle, it is not perceptable to `the touch, and serves to keep nut c irmand steady in position.
By turning. handle A from left to right the screwbolt B is drawn further into the handle, and the length of. slot b in screw-bolt B is caused to be shortened, thereby accommodatingitself` to the width of the saw-blade, whatever that may be, while the process of turning the handle A in the opposite direction, 0r ii'om right to left, causes the 'saw to be released,
and the handle A can be removed from the saw-blade.
When the shank of the screw-boltis passed through. the clamp-nut or block D, and screwed into'nut al, and the clamp-nut D turned so that the notches on its face will be coincident with the edge oi' the hack of the saw which is inserted inthe slotb of thescrewbolt B, and the notches in the clamp-nut D embrace the back of the saw, as seen in iig. 2, and the handle A then turned from left to right and down upon the shank a. of screw-holt B, the clamp-nut D is forced uponthe saw, and the handle is "firmly and securely fixed to the saw, and cannot be removed therefrom until the handle is turned in the onpositedireetion, or from' right to left, when it is released and can easily be taken from the saw. i, The construction and arrangement oi' devices, as I -have descrihedh makes an attachment that is cheap,
easilyk operated, and that can be depended upon for security as wcli as durability, and not likely to get out ot' order, and will admit ot' considerable variation in tlxewidth of saw-blades. I am aware that slotted screw-shanks, inserted in handles, have been used for att-aching handles to saws; such slotted shanks or hooks I do not claim; nor do I4 claim the uutlinserted in the. handle, or the ferrule on t-he'same; hut
lHavingdescribed my invention, ',What L claim, and desire to secure by Letters .Pate'nt, as an improvement on my former patent, is
' The combination ofthe handle A, slotted screwboltB, ferrule C, notched clamp-nut D, and nut a", when constructed and arranged in the manner and for the purpose described..
