UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. MODONNELL AND AXEL L. ANDERSON, OF MONTELLO, IVIS.
, MlLLSTONE-PICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,647, dated July 3, 1883.
Application filed February 27, 1883. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM CHARLES Me- I DONNELL and AXEL LEONARD ANDERSON, of
Montello, in the county of Marquette and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mill-Picks; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view of the pick with a part of the handle broken away. Fig. 2 is a side view of the head of the pick with the parts detached and Fig. 3 is a top view of the head of the pick. Fig. 4 is a View of the upper portion of the handle, looking at it in a plane at right angles to the view given in Fig. 1.
Our invention relates to certain improvements upon that form of mill-pick in which the pick-head is formed of two toothed plates that are clamped together by a screw upon an adjustable blade having an upset or headed end, which is caught between and held by the teeth of the two plates, and which blade may be adjusted farther'out as it wears away.
Our invention consists in combining with such a head, as fastened together by a screw, a screw-driver or wrench permanently fixed to the handle carrying the head, whereby the said wrench or screw-driver is always availa ble for unscrewing the plates of the head, and is not liable to become lost.
In the drawings, A A represent two metal blocks or plates having coinciding notches a, which plates are clamped together, by means of a screw, B, upon the cutting-blades O, of which there is one at each end. These cut ting blades have a sharp or chisel-shaped edge at their outer ends, and at their inner ends are upset, or provided with heads I), that fit in the coinciding notches in the inner faces of the plates, which notches .form shoulders, against which the heads bear to resist the impact of the blow and prevent the blades from being driven up. There are several of these sets of notches at each end, so that as the cuttingblades wear shorter they may be set farther out toward the ends of the plates A A. The
screw B, which clamps the two plates A A together, has its head 0 countersunk in a hole in the plate A, and is formed with two notches or holes, (1 d, to receive the prongs of a wrench or spanner for turning it in or out. In the place of these notches, however, a straight nick may be used, adapted to receive a screwdriver. The head, as formed of the I two plates A A, it will be seen is thickest in the middle, and tapers to both ends, and it is held in the handle D by being wedged into atapering slot cut through the handle, near its end, in which slot it is held by frictional contact. The object of countersinking the head of the clamping-screw will here become apparent, for this permits the head to wedge itself freely into the slot in the handle up to its greatest thickness without obstruction.
The handle D is made of strong hard wood, and has an enlarged'square end where the slot is made through it, and to prevent this end from splitting from the wedging action of the head metal strips or bands 6 e are arranged upon opposite sides of the handle, on each side of the slot, and are fastened together by long rivets f f, passing entirely through the handle. To one side of the handle, near its end, is also fastened a plate, 9, having two prongs, g, which fit into the holes or notches in the head of the clampingscrew B, and serve as a wrench for turning the same in and out. This wrench, it will be seen, can never get detached from. the handle or become lost, and it co-operates with another metal strip, h, on the opposite side, to which it is fastened by rivets i, for the purpose of further strengthening thehandle at this point. v
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is The combination, with a mill pick head composed of two plates clamped together by a screw, of a handle having awrench or screwdriver permanently attached thereto for turning the screw, substantially as described.
, WILLIAM CHARLES MCDONNELL.
