GARTER-HOLDER.
Specitcaton of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6,1913.
Application led September 2, 1911. Serial No. 647,378.
To all/whom it may concern Be it known that I, NORA E. P. Biiiio- MANN, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at New York. in the 'county ot New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garter- Holders, of which the lfollowing is a specifi'- cation.
.This invention relates to garter holders for ladies stockings or hose, and the pri mary object of the saine is to provide siniple and effective means in connection with the top of ladies stockings or hose having devices for attachment thereto of the garter clasps and operating to equally distribute the pulling strain over the entire top poi'- t-ion of the stocking and obviating the necessity of directly engaging thegarter clasps with the stocking top and thereby prevent Wear and tear of the top portion of the stocking, the improved means being readily removable from one stocking and applicable to another.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed in preferred form.
4 In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a portion of a stocking carryingthe improved garter holder with the garter clasps and Suspenders or. straps attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the improved holder. Fig. 3 is a detail cross-sectional view of the upper portion of the stocking and holder.
The numeral 5 designates a stocking having a hem (l at the top thereof as usual and provided with openings 7, 8 and 9 at ditter ent points therein for purposes which will be presently explained. Loosely mounted or threaded through and inclosed by the upper portion of the hem G is the improved holder 10 consisting of a strip of leather or other suitable material of an inelastic character and preferably circular in cross-sectioii. The strip will be long enough to cxtend fully through the vhein as an entirety and will be of ditl'erent lengths to siiit stockings having various top dimensions. 'llie strip has end attaching or securing devices of any suitable form applied thereto, one form being shown in the drawing and consisting of ribbons or tape 1l which are drawn through the opening T of the stocking hem and tied tightly to bring the terminals ot' the holder in close relation and in removable association with the stocking hem. The ends of the holder or strip when secured are inclosed within the stocking hein and only the extremities of the attaching or securing devices therefor are projected through the opening of the hein. On the holder at different points attaching loops or rings are applied and, as shown in the drawin the attaching loo )s 12 are formed of suitable fabric, one o the same being located in such position as to come at the back of the stocking aiid two of the saine at the front of the stocking, the single loop projecting through the opening 8 and the two loops extending through the opening 0 iii the stocking hem. The holder 10 will tit loosely around the limb and will not have any binding tendency thus avoiding interference wit circulation of the blood. One set of the holders complete will be ample for use with any number of pairs of stockings and may be readily removed from one pair of stockings and inserted in another pair by a simple operation. It is preferred that the strip forming the main body of the holder be made of a material stiff enough to keep it away from the limb when pulling strain is exerted thereon.
-By forming the strip or holder circular in cross-section and of flexible material of the character hereinbefore specified, inconvenience and annoyance to the wearer will be avoided by reason ot' the rounded surface of the holder located adjacent. to the limb and the conformity of the holder to different -bodily movements siitlicient to avoid binding action on the. limb. l4`iirthei'inore, the crosssectional contour of the strip or holder will materially reduce wear on thel hem portion of the stocking in which it is inserted and the pulling strain exerted on the holder in view of its circular cross-sectional contour will not set iip a cutting action on the stock ing hem.
In attaching the garters to the improved holder the front clasps 13, held by the usual forni of straps 14, will be attached to the front pair of loops 12 and tlie rear clasp l5 on the lower end of the i'ear strap 1t', will be attached to the single rear loop 12. The clasps 13 and l5 are readily attacliable to and detachable-troiii the loops l2, and by this means direct attachment ot' the saiilclasps with any part ot' the stocking itself is avoided and the pulling strain oi' tension is exerted equally around tlie-top of the able cost.
stocking through 'the medium of the main portionof the holder 10. wWhen the clasps 13 and 15 are detached the holdr'vill re# main intact "with the stocking and is only 5 removed when it is desired to change the stocking.
The improved holder is very simple in its construction and can'be cheaply manufact-ured and placed on the market at a reason- The improved `device iyill be found economical in the use of stocklngs in view of the avoidance of Wear and injury to the tops of stockings resulting from the direct attachment of the garter clasps there- 15 3to. The openings 7, 8 and -9 in the hem 6 of the stocking may be readily formed by the user of the holder, said openings being located in the outer portion of the\'hem so thatl the inner part of the latter is between the body of the 'holder and the limb of the liability of chaing or other physical inconvenience.
What is claimed is:
1. A garter holder consisting of a continuous strip of inelastic material and of the same cross-sectional dimension from end to end, the said strip bein adapted to be removably applied in the hem at the top of a stocking, garter attaching devices applied at different points throughout the length of the strip and projected through the hem of the stocking, and fastenin devices secured to the ends of the strip to raw the latter in endwise close relation Within the hem -to avoid projection of any part of the strip exteriorly of the hem, the strip being readily insertible in and Withdrawable from the hem.
2. A garter holder consisting of a strip of inelastic material which is freely flexible and of the same cross-sectional dimension from end to end thereof, the strip being adapted to be loosely and removably threaded through the top hem of a stocking and having fastening devices at the 'ends to draw 3. A garter holder consisting of a continuy ous strip of inelastic material which is iexible and provided with fabric fastening devices at the ends to draw the latter in close endwise relation and also provided with fabric garter attaching devices at diierent points vthroughout the length thereof, the said strip being adapted to be removably applied in the hem at the top of a stocking and the garter attaching. devices projected through openings formed in the hem for eX- terior access, the attached ends of the strip also being inserted in and Wholly inclosed by the stocking hem and accessible through an opening in the latter, the strip being readily removable from and insertible in t-he hem of he stocking and the extremities of the flexible fastening devices for the ends of the strip being projected to the exterior of the stocking hem.
4. A garter holder consisting of a continuous'strip of inelastic material substantially circular in cross-section and flexible, the said strip of material being of the same dimension from end 'to end and adapted to be removably applied in the hem' at the top of a stocking, the stripy being. also provided with textile fabric fastening devices at the ends to draw the latter in close endwise' relation within the hem and wholly inclosed by the latter, and textile fabric garter attaching devices secured to the strip and loosely proj ected through openings in the stocking hem, the strip being readily remo: able from and insertible in the hem of a stocking.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
