COMBINATION CORD-HOLDER AND FASTENER-CLENCHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6,1913.
Application filed August 30, 1912. Serial No. 717,862.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. CoA'rEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sidell, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Combination Cord-Holder and Fastener- Clencher; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the art of bundle wrapping, and particularly to a new and useful combination cord holder and fastener clencher, for expediting the tying of bundles, packages and the like.
As one of the objects of the invention, it is the aim, to provide a device or tool of this design, through which the cord or twine is extended or fed, and provided with means for temporarily clenching or holding the cord, while the same is being drawn tight about the bundle, after which a fastener is clamped to the ends of the cord by the clenching jaws of the device or tool, to hold the cord in position and tied. The clenching jaws of the device or tool are constructed with severing means for cutting the cord, after the fastener has been clenched.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :-Fignre 1 is a view showing the improved combination cord holder and fastener clencher. Fig. 2 is a sectional view therethrough. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view. Figs. 1 and 5 are detail views. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the U-shaped fastener 10. Fig. 7 is a plan view partly in section.
Referring to the drawings 1 and 2 designate the clenching jaws of the device, which jaws are pivoted together by the pin 3, there being a coil spring 4 surrounding the pivot pin 3, with its free ends 5 seated in the concaved portions of the handle mem bers 6 and 7, which merge into the jaws 1 and 2, as shown in the drawings.
The jaws 1 and 2 are provided with grooves 8 and 9, which receive the U-shaped fastener 10. The arm 11 of the fastener is rolled upon itself, thereby providing an arm which is substantially circular in cross section. The arm 12 of the fastener is substantially fiat, and is provided with a pair of tongues 13, one upon each side as shown. These tongues 13 are clamped against the arm 11, to hold the same clamped against the ends of the cord, when the fastener is clenched.
The pin 3 is extended a short distance beyond the jaws in a lateral direction beyond where the jaws are pivoted, and is provided with a collar 14, and beyond the collar, the pin 3 is formed with a rectangular portion 15, which passes through the opening 15 of the arm 16, which is hollow, as shown in the drawings, there being openings 15", through which the cord 17 passes into the hollow portion of the arm. The cord passes through an eye 18 at the end of the arm 16. The arm 16 is held upon the rectangular portion 15 by the nut 16. Pivoted at 16 to the extremity of the pin 3 is a lever 16, which is under the tension of the spring 16, which tends to hold the pin 16 (which is pivoted at 16 to the said lever) in contact with the inner wall of the hollow portion of the arm 16, so as to clamp the cord 17, as shown in Figs. 3 and 7. The pin 16 passes through an opening 1.6 of the said arm.
When tying or wrapping a bundle, pressure is applied upon the end 16 of the lever 16, so as to loosen or release the cord, and after a sufficient amount of cord has been used to tie the bundle as shown in Fig. 1, the U-shaped clip 10 is placed in position between the jaws, in the manner shown in Fig. 1, with the intersecting portions of the cord between the arms 11 and 12 of the fastoner, after which pressure is relieved upon the lever 16,.which will permit the pin 16 to again clamp the cord, as shown in Figs. 3 and 7 When the cord is so clamped by the pin 16, the cord on the bundle may be drawn tight, after which the arms 11 and 12 are firmly clenched together, which will clench the intersecting portion of the cord, thereby holding the bundle tied. One end of the pin 16" is provided with teeth 16', in order to insure the clamping of the cord. Substantially instantly after the arms of the fastener are clenched, the cord is cut by the severing knives 20 of the jaws 1 and 2. The cord from the ball or the like passes through an eye 21 of the handle member 6, and then through the groove of one of the handle members.
From the foregoing it will be observed there has been produced a novel, simple and inexpensive combination cordholder and fastener clencher, for expediting the tying of bundles and the like,v and one which has been found practical.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In combination, a pair of jaws pivotally united and terminating in handle members, the jaws having grooves adapted to receive the arms of a fastener, an arm secured to the pi'vot'of the jaws and through which a strand of cord is adapted to pass, one of the handlemenibers having an eye through: which the" cord passes prior to passing through said arm.
2. In combination, a pair of jaws pivotall'y united and terminatingin handle memhere, the jaws having grooves adapted to reoei ve the arms at a fastener aniarm secured t-othe'pivot o'f'th'e jaws-and through which a strand of cord: is adaptedto pass, and means extending through said arm to clamp -bers, the jawshaving grooves adaptedto receive the arms of a fastener and provided ,with severing knives, an arm secured to the pivot of the jaws and through, which a strand of'co'rd'is adapted to pass, a member extending laterally and partially into said arm to clamp said cord against the inner portion ofsaid arm, means forwithdrawing said member, and aspring cooperating with said means for'holding the member clamped against said cord. 7
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to thisspec'ification in the presence of two subscribing'witnes'ses.
