Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6, 1913.
To all wkom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. MEYER, a
fcitizen-of the United States, and a resident of Oshkosh, in the county of l/Vi'nnebago and Stateof Vvisconsin, have invented cerpended.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple, economical and efficient garment supporting fixture adapted to be used in connection with trunks or cases and to enable garhients to be supported within a compartment and to "be readilv withdrawn to more accessible position while supported by or suspended from such device. Other and further objects of the invention will appear from an examination of the description and claims and from the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this specification, i
4 The invention cons sts in features, combinations and detailsqof construction herein described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings ':Figure 1 is a perspective view of a trunk or case provided with a garment'supporting fixture constructed in accordance with my improve ments; Fig. 2 is a detail view in vertical sec tion takenyapproximately on line- 2-2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction'of the arrow, and showing the telescoping members of one side of the fixture in extended position; Fig.
3 isa similar view showing the members illustrated in Fig. 2 in collapsed position;
Fig. '4: is a detail view in vertical section iaken on line M of Fig. 2 looking in the.
direction of the arrow, and showing. the, tubular member and the mannerof connecting the transverse and longitudinal frame port-ions of the slidable frame shown in Fig.
1; Fig. 5 is a detail view in vertical section "taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow, and showing an in nerguiding bracket or catch; Fig. 6 15 an enlarged horizontal detail view partly in section showing .a .portion of the tubular member on one side of the slidable frame slidably mounted in a guiding member or bracket, a longitudinal side frame member slidably mounted in such tubular member, and a transverse frame member having connecting means extending through the slot in the tubular member and forming a connection between such transverse and longitudinal frame members; Fig. 7 is a view in horizontal section of a case or trunk provided with a garment supporting fixture} constructed in accordance with my invention in a modified form. Fig. 8 is an enlarged horizontal detail view partly in section showing the arrangement and manner of connecting the longitudinal frame member and .tubular members of the fixture shown in Fig; 7 Fig. 9 is an enlarged detail view in vertical section taken on line 99 of Fig. 7 lookingin the direction of the arrow, and showing a tubular member slidably mounted in a guid- 'ing bracket or socket member secured to the case or compartment, and big. 10' is a similar detail new in vertical section taken on line 1.0-'10 of Fig. 7 looking in the direction of the arrow, and showing a supporting bracket or guiding socket member, a tubular member slidably mounted in the bracket, and a longitudinal frame member slidably mounted in such tubular member and connected-with a transverse frame member which extends through the socket in the tubular member.
In constructing a garment supporting ture and mounting the same in operative position in a case, trunk or compartment, in accordance with my invention and improvements, I provide a case or trunk having a body portion comprising side walls (1, end walls I) and c, and aback or bottom wall (Z, andhaving a cover, lid or door 6 hinged to such body portion and adaptedto form a" closed compartment for COIltELlIllIlg; clothe or garments to be suspended within. s uc compartment. Secure to the uprlght or side walls of the case or compartment are I supporting brackets or guiding socket members f which are held securely in rigid position by means of screws 9. These stationary socket members or brackets are each pro.- vided with a guiding'socket h.
' A sliding frame is provided which is made preferably by bending a rod so as to form 1 member or stitute end portions of said transverse mem- These transverse frame members or end portions, pins or rivets extend through longitudinal side frame members or portions tions z by means of pins'or rivets-0, which pins or rivets may be in the form of or conher.
the corresponding slot m, in the adjacent tubular member so as to connect the longitudinal parallel side frame members or portions 71 in rigid relation to each other. The tubular members Z are each provided at one end with a collar or annular end portion 72 which encircles the corresponding side frame member or side rod i atpoints between the outer transverse end member is of the frame and the ends of the transverse member a. And the frame thus constructed maybe pro vided with inner frame members 9 adapted to support clothes hangers r which may be of any ordinary or desired form, but which are preferably of such construction as to comprise a top member having opposite slotted end portions 8 in engagement with hanger supporting members of the slidable frame and a depending garment supporting member If adapted to enable garments to be suspended therefrom.
' The transverse member which connects the parallel longitudinal side frame portions or members of the slidable frame may be made 4 in the form of a rod or bar a, shown in Fig.
7, having its opposite ends extending through the slots in the tubular members and secured to the longitudinal side frame members 2' so as to form a rigid connection therebetween, as shown in Figs. 7 to 10inclusive. Then the device is constructed in the manner shown in Figs. 7 to 10 inclusive clothes hangers 'u may be mounted with their slotted end portions 10 movably supported upon the frame members a and k respectively. Flexible guiding catches or yielding socket members fl/ are mounted in the frame, case or compartment each in position to engage a tubular member Z when the latter is moved inwardly to'the position shown in Fig. 3, so as to prevent the accidental movement of the tubular members Z outwardly or in a direction in which they are moved in order to form a support for the slidable frame when the latter is in its extended or outermost positiorn An enlarged end portion or collar 2 is mounted forms an annular shoulder adapted to engage a guiding socket member or bracket f,
in such a manner as to limit the outward movement of the tubular members.
The transverse frame members or connecting pins 0 which extend through the possible in the case, trunk or other compartment in which it is mounted, the transverse member a is of such construction that when lying in a horizontal plane or in the plane of the frame of which it forms a part, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, its widest surfaces will be in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the longitudinal side frame mem-. bers The end portions 2 of the trans verse member n are bent into such a-position' that they are parallel with the side frame members 2' and so disposed as to'provide a space betweenthe end portions 2 and the side frame members 2 adapted to enable the slidable frame to move freely with respect to the tubular members and to admit the longitudinal slotted portions 'of the tubular members between the end portions 2 and the side frame port-ions By providing a plurality of connecting and guiding pins or transverse frame members 0 and securing their opposite ends to the end portions 2 of the transverse frame member a and to the longitudinal rods or frame portions 2', as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the ends of the frame portions 2' are so connected that the frame is for all practical purposes as r strong and rigid. as if it were made of one integral piece. The nner braces or frame members 9 serve to st1ll further strengthen and, increase the rigidity of the frame as".
well as to provide suitable means for sup?" porting the removable hangers thereon, as already suggested. a a
By the above arrangement it will be readily seen that a slidable frameis provided which is' of rigid construction adapted to afford the maximum strength consistent with the weight of the material of which it is formed, and that, being of Ilgl'd construction, it may be readily moved inward and outwardor from extended to collapsed position or "ice versa with the clothes or garments suspended upon suitable hangers which are removably mounted thereon, and that the fixture when in extended position will form a strong and-eificient support for the garments, and is adapted to be operated of great durability and simplicity of construction.
I claim 1. In an extensible supporting device, the combination of two endwise movable tubular members, provided with inwardly and op positely facing, longitudinal slots, guide :brackets for supporting said tubular members, located inwardly from the ends of the paths of 'movement thereof, and provided with slots coinciding with those of the tubular members, rods slidably, mounted in said tubular members, and'horizontal transverse members extending between, and rigidly connecting the extremities of said rods; said vtransverse members being located in the same horizontal plane with" said rods and one of saidtransverse. members having its end portions extended horizontally through the slots of said tubular members and attached to the saigrods'inside of the same.
2. In an extensible supporting device, the combination of two endwise movable tubular members, provided with inwardly and op-v positely facing slots extending substantially of said tubular members, and a slida-ble frame member comprising a rectangularly bent U-shaped rod, having its parallel side portions slidably mounted in said tubular members, and a horizontal, transverse bar ,member provided with end-portions bent at right angles thereto, said transverse bar member extending bet-ween the extremities of the parallel side portions of said rod, and provided with pins extending through the slots of said tubular members and rigidly secured in thevend portions of said transverse 'bar member and of the rod.-
In testimony, that I claimthe as my invention I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses, this fifth day of June A. D. 1912.
FRANK w. MEYER.
