BIT-HOLDER.
, a new and Improved Bitdlolder, otivliich the following is a :'t'uli, clear, and exact description.
The object- Of the invention is to provide a new and improved bit holder or brace chuck arranged to facilitate the exchange of (lidera-nt bits, to securely holc'bits o t difierent sizes securely in positioi and to prevent ulling of the bit out of the socket while the Agit is in use. For the purpose mentioned use is made oi a head having a split socket. tor the reception of a hit shank, a. sieeve niounted to turn on the said head and adapted to close the members, the socket on turning the sleeve also having lengthwise movement on the said head, and wedgingjaws adapted to wedge between the socket members and the bit shank and moving lengthwise with the said sleeve.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented inthe accompanying drawings forming a art of this specification, in which similar characters ot reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure It is a sectional side elevation ot' the bit hoider with the jaws and socket ineinbers in open position; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same with a bit inserted and the socket members and aws in closed or locking osition; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the ead, the socket and the jaws in open po-l sition and the sleeve shown in section; Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the hit holder with the parts in position as shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 5 5 ofFig. 3; Fig. 6 is a similar view of the same on the line 5 6 ot' Fig. i; and Fig. '7 isa perspective View of the wedging jaws and with the spring arms open.
The head A of the bit holder or brace chuck is provided with a split socket at its forward end to provide spring socket meinbers B, B having tapering V-shaped recesses B at their inner opposite faces forthe reception of the square tapering end C of the bit to be held in place in the holder or chuck. The forward ends of thesocket members B, B are somewhat reduced and are provided with exterior cam surfaces B2 adapted to engage corresponding cam surfaces D integral on the inner surface at the forward end of Specification of Letters Patent.
v Application led July E, 1912. lSerial No. 707,742.

teh/e sleeve D, mounted to turn and to slide lengthwise on the head A. Thus when the sleeve D is turned the cani surfaces D acting on the cam surfaces B2 cause the socket members B, B to move inward toward each other, thus securely clamping thc shank C of the bit in place in the socket, and when the sleeve D is turned in the opposite direc tion, the socket members B, B are released and turn by their own resiliency into n0rnially outward or open position. I
The V-shaped tapering recesses B of the socket members B, B terminate at their outer ends in outwardly-imlined V-sl1aped guideways B3 engaged by correspondingly-shaped wedging jaws E, E provided :it/their inner edges with bevels E adapted to engage the shank C at the forward end thereofl with a view to hold the bit against bein" pulled 'out of the socket during the time the bit is in' use. The jaws E, E areheld on spring arms F extending rearwardly between the socket members B, B, and the rear ends of the spring varms are provided with lugs F slidingly engaging a guidewa-y A formed on the head A in the rear of the split, as will be readily understood by'reference to the drawings. The forward ends of the wedging jaws E are in close proximity to an au.- nular shoulder D2 extending inwardly on the forward end of the sleeve D, and the lugs F are in close proximity to an annular shoulder D extending inwardly in the 'rear end of the sleeve D, so that when the latter is moved lengthwise on the head A the jaws E move with the sleeve, and when the sleeve D' is moved rearwardly trom the position shown in Figs. l and 3 to the position shown in 2 and 4, then the jaws E are caused to travel inwardly toward each other owing to the tapering `sruideways B3 in which the jaws E are m'ounted to slide. lVhen the sleeve D is moved outwardly from the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4 to the position shown in Figs. 1 andv 3 then the jaws E move into open position owing to the action ofthe spring arms F with a view to release the shank of the bit.
ln usinfr the device the sleeve D is moved into outward position limited by the lugs F reaching the forward end of the guideway A to allow ofA inserting the Shank C into the socket formed by the socket memlow-s B. and when this has been done the eperat'or slidesthe sleeve D rearwardly on the head Arto cause thejawsEft'o move rearwnrdly and `to wedge members B end the forward shank (l, as plainly indicated in Fig. he operator then turns the sleeve l) on the head A to cause the eem. surfaces D to eet eti the com. surfaces E, as previously de .scribed7 with n view to move 'the soelet meer bers E 'inwardly tovnrd erich other tl'nis firmly gripping the shonlr C between. them.
From the forego" f, it will he seen that by the arrangement described the shank C of the bitk is not oni),T tirmlv ripped lietween the sockel: members but also engaged bv the wedging uws. l/to securely hol d the bit from l'ieng pulled ont o the socket'. lil/hen it is f. ired 'to remove the bit from the holder, the operator turns the 'sleeve D tocmlse com surfaces D to releasethe socket members lh :1nd then, the sleeve l) moved forward and with it 'the clamping wedges E to move the latterout of engagement with' the sbonk C of thebit, and` the letter een now be withdrawn.
llt will be noticed that it the square `tflpering end oi' the shank C is short, it is necessary toslide the sleeve Derther beck on the head than when the said end longer,
fbut in either, ense the` tapering` wedges E ere firmly wedged in pince to hold the hit against beingpulled outfol' its socket,
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire toseeure by Letters Patent-z n l.
