Serial No. 625.558.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, HAizLAN J. MAYNARD, a citizen of the United States. and resident of Newton Highlands, in the county of Mid dlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Nipples for Nursingottles, of which the following is a specitication.
in feeding children it is found that one of the greatest ditticulties is to control the rapidity with which the food is taken and that too rapid feeding is one of the chief causes of infantile disorders.
The object of the present invention is to reduce a nipple for a nursing or feeding ottle whicn can be readily manipulated so as to control the rapidity with which the child extracts the iuid Jfrom the bottle.
The invention will be described in connection with the accompanying drawing. in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a nipple for a nursing bottle embodying the present invention', and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal cross section through the discharge orifice.
The invention is applicable to any form of nipple, whether rigid or tlexiinle. and I have illustrated itl in connection with one ot' the commonly used forms.
In nipples as ordinarily constructed there are one or more openings at or near the outer extremity and it isnot practicable to control the flow of the tluid. In some in stances the openings have been purposely made so as to permit of a free tlow of the liquid food. According to the present invention .l provide the nipple A. with a small opening or perforation a at one side of the forward art ot' the nipple and extending through trom the interior to the outer surface thereof. With a nipple so constructed the tiuid may be extracted With suflicient rapidity While the anis of the opening a is horizontal. By turning the bottle and. nipple so as to bring the opening a into contact with either the tongue, or the roof of the childs mouth. the discharge through the openiiupY will be restrictea. the tongue or the roof of the mouth acting as a valve to close or partiallyY close the opening. The feeding may thereby be controlled or regulated as desired. As an aid in regulating the feeding' l preferablyv provide an index point or mai-her I) on the base of the nipple and in the sume axial 'plane as the oriice a so that when the latter is hidden in the child`s month its position may be accurately determined.
It will he evident that my invention may be applied to nipples of various contours, whether rigid or flexible. it will also he evident that tivo or mort` pertoratious might be substituted tor the single opening a., provided such perfor-ations are so A`grouped as to be the equivalent o'r' the single opening. That is. so grouped that the tongue. or the roof ot the mouth ma)v he used :is a valve to close them. lu the preferred torni of my invention however the nipple is provided with a single lateral as shown in the drawing.
Having described mi" inventionV what l. claini and desire to .secure by .itters-Patt ent is:
A nipple tor nursing or 'feeding bottles havinzgr a perforation in and through its side wall and ha ng a portion to' tit over the noch ot a bottle. the said nipple being otherwise inipcrtorate. for the purpose set forth.
in testimony whereof i aiiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
