TANK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6,1913.
Application filed January 2,6, 1912. Serial No. 673,649.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK H. LINDEN- BERG, citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tanks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tanks andk is .particularly designed' as an improvement in flushing tanks calculated to produce an extremely simple and compact structure with a maximum simplicity of formation.
It is further aimed to provide a struct-ure having a high degree of rigidity and this is desirably effec-ted vby the provision of a bracing element for the open top of the tank.
This may be in the nature of a separate element or may be formed integrally with .the tank body. It is desirable in the formation of this bracing element to have it of such a structure thatl it will constitute a guide for a top constructed to slide thereon and in addition will be provided with depending fingers constructed and operable to retain the lining of the tank in its proper position, such fingers being further peculiarly formed to assist in supporting and bracing the top slid there-over.
In the construction o-f my tank, it may be formed entirely of one piece or the body may be formed of one piece and the bracing element by an independent piece. The lining of the tank is desirably spaced from the tank itself by the provision of a corrugated moisture-proof piece of any desired material.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which similar character of reference designate corresponding parts, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved tank showing the body portion formed in one piece and showing a separate framework carried upon the open top of said body portion in a manner to rigidly brace the same. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a modified form of tank wherein the tank and the bracing struct-ure are all formed in one piece, Fig. 3 is a cross section of the tank shown in Fig. 1 with the top mounted thereon, Fig. 4 is a cross section of the tank shown in Fig. 2 with the top mounted thereon, Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank of which the body portion shown in Fig. 1 is formed, and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank of which the structure shown in Fig. 2 is formed.
In the drawings, referring to the form shown in Figs. I, 3 and 5, it will be seen that the blank comprises the front piece 1, rounded corners 2, sides 3 and pieces 4 which join to form the back. The portion 5 comprises the bottom and the dotted line shows the extent of the surplus material in the blank of the bottom. The formation of the blankv shown in Fig. 5, makes it apparent that the tank formed thereby, will be open at its upper end and for the purpose of rigidly bracing this open end, I provide a skeleton framework formed of an outer rim 6 of substantially L-shape, a plurality of cross braces 7 desirably integrally formed with the said rim and a plurality of L- shaped fingers 8 extending inwardly in the same plane with the upper edge of the rim 6 and then downwardly within the tank. The form and size of these fingers is especially calculated to permit. them to serve as retaining fingers for an inner lining 9 which is desirably spaced from the interior wall of the body of the tank by a moisture-proof material, as hitherto stated. It will. be understood that the L-shaped formation of the rim 6 causes the same to serve as an efficient guide for a cover 10 having a hook-shaped flange 11 formed on three sides thereof.
The structure shown in Figs. 2, 4 and 6 is an example of a preferred manner of forming a tank of this type entirely from one piece of material with the exception of the inner lining. In this structure and re,- ferring to the blank shown in Fig. 6, the face is designated 12, corners 13, sides 14 and portions 15 which unite to form the back. The base is designated 1G and the dotted lines thereof show the surplus material necessary to effect a proper joining. The upper bracing element is, in this case, formed integrally with the blank and is designated 17, being spaced from the face 12 by surplus material 18 calculated to permit of the formation, with the surplus material 19, of a bracing rim 20. This rim serves to reinforce the top of the tank in the same manner that the same is reinforced by the rim 6 in the structure shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 5 and to likewise serve as a guideway for the top to be applied thereto. 4The portion 17 of this blank is further stamped out as at 21 to form reinforcing strips 22 and depending fingers 23 effective to retain the inner lining 24 in proper position. The stamping out of these pieces is effective to leave a practically open top for the insertion of the fittings and there is thus produced the effect of an open top with an integral bracing structure. Mounted upon this top and slid t-hereon in the same manner as in the previously described structure, is a cover 25.
It will be seen that I have provided a structure of tank which is readily made and combines with this simplicity a certain rigidity largely the result of the bracing element at the top and that there are various other features resulting from this simplicity and this bracing element, rendering the tank extremely desirable.
What I claim, is*
1. A sheet metal tank having an open top an independent bracing element for said top portion, an independent inner receptacle, y and meanscarried by the upper portion of said tank for maintaining said inner receptacle in spaced relation to said tank. p
2. A sheet metal tank having an opening` in the top, bracing means spanning said top7 an inner receptacle, and means carried by Copies of this patent may be obtained for said bracing means for maintaining said inner' receptacle in spaced relation to said tank.
3; A tank formed with an open top, an independent bracing framework, a lining, and fingers on said framework for maintaining said lining in spaced relation to said tank.
4L. A tank comprising a receptacle having an open top, a framework bracing said topj depending fingers on said framework, and an inner lining held spaced from said tank by said fingers.
5. A tank comprising a` receptacle having an open top, a framework bracing said top,
a lining, L-shaped retaining fingers on said framework and for said lining, and a slidable top, said lingers being constructed to partially support said top.
In testimony whereof I afEX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
