WILLIAM RIBERKOF, or
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
DISPLAY-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 29, 1 913.
Application Med May 80. 1812. Serial No. 698,570.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM Rmaanor, 'a citizen of the United States, residin at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Display-ilolders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a display device, the main object. of the invention boin to provide a. device of this character in w iich a plurality of horizontally rotatable frames are secured to a rothtable support so as to he intermittently moved through their orbit or travel so as to be successively presented to view on the front side of the apparatus.
A further object of the' invention is the provision of means for imparting to each frame rotation suflicient to reverse-its position when in the front or view point of its orbit.
A still further object is the provision of means for automatically locltin the rotary support for a certain period time when any one of the display frames is in its front position. I
A further ob'ect of the invention is to provide means or holdin each of the display frames normally loc ceda ainst rotation, and further means for re easing the locking means of each frame at a certain time during the interval in which it is in its front position to permit a semi-revoiution of the frame caused by means provided therefor.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described andclaimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a modified form of the device which is poweroierated. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view throu h a portion of the device, showing the loc ing means. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary bottom plan view showing the intermittent gears. ig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical section showing the releasing. means. lig; fragmentary horizontal section of t 0 same. Fig. 7 is a fra entary cross section of one of the supporting arms showing the bearing roller.
In the drawin I have represented a display device whic is to be operated by power (lisa and has provided for the purpose means for controlling the intermittent operation of both the rotary support and the display frames, and also means for locking boti at the proper intervals in their movements.
Referring to the drawings by numerals. 42 designates the supporting use of the device which ct'unpriscs a circular base plate 43 mounted on the le s 44. The plate 43 is centrally provided with a vertical 0 )ening for the reception of the bearing plate it having a central vertical opening 47 adapted to rot atably receive the lower end of the vertical shaft 48. A spider 49 is fixedly sccurcd to the. shaft 48 a ainst the upper surface of the bearing p ate 46, whose upper portion is enlarged to form a flange 50 which may be readily secured to the base glate 43 by means of suitable screws 51.
upporting arms 52 radiating from the spider 49ers T-shaped in cross section so as to lend the desired rigidity thereto, and have provided on their outer ends the dcpcnding enlar cments 58 having vertical openins 54. he upper s ider 55 which is securet to the shaft 48 a jacent its upper end is provided with the resilient radiating arms 56. The outer ends of the arms 5t) are provided with down-turned pintles 57 adapted to be received b I the central recess 58 in the upper rails 5i) 0 the display franu-s (50. The vertically depending shafts (31 carried by the lower rails 62 of the display frames tit) arc rotatabl received within the openings at oi the on argcd bearing heads as on the outer ends of the su iporting arms 52' An intermittent gear wlicel oil is socurcd to the protruding lower end of the shaft 61 for rotation in a horizontal plane. A depending stub shaft (54 is attached to the under surface of the base plate 43 at a point between the central boat-in plate 40 and the front edge of the base p ate and is adapted to have rotatably mounted thereon a large gear (if) having our teeth (ill providcd in a predcterminod length of its pc riphery'. 'l to gear wheel (i3 is provided in opposite portions with teeth 67 and (3H adapted to intermittently intcrmesh with the teeth (iti of the gear 0-"), and the portion of the gear intervening between the toothed portions 67 and ('18 are concaved as at (in and 70, for frictional engagement with the smooth icriphery 71 of the wheel on so as to lock the gear (38 in either one of two posh to cotiperate with t-ions during the intervals of time in which the teeth 66 of the wheel are in that portion of their travel distant from the car 63. A gear wheel 72 is fixedly secure to the protruding lower end of the vertical shaft- 48. This gear wheel 72 is provided at spaced. intervals on its periphery with toothed portions 73. These toothed portions are equal in number to the radiating arms of the rotatable support, and the space intervening between the toothed portions is eoncaved, as at 74, for frictional engagement with the smooth perivhery 71 of the gear wheel 65. The toothe portions 73 of the ear 72 are adapted successively to intermesi with the toothed portions 66 of the wheel 65 when in the innermost point of its travel. A power ear 7a is mounted on a depending sleeve 16 formed on the hub of the gear wheel 65. This gear 7 5 is adapted to be operatively connected to some suitable source of power.
Upon reference to Fig. 4 it will be seen that upon rotation of the gear wheel 65 in the direction of the arrow a, the toothed portion 66 thereof will pass around until it comes into engagement with the toothed pertion'67 of the gear 68, whereupon rotary motion of the gear will be given in the direction of the arrow b. '1 llS motion of the gear 63 represents a'half revolution of the corresponding display frame thus reversing its faces. As soon as the toothed portion 66 of the large gear is passed out of engagementwith the toothed portion 67, it will travel back toward the central gear 72, the gear 68 being efiectively held against rotation by the frictional engagement of the concaved face 70 with the smooth face 71 of the gear 65. When the toothed portion 66 has reached. the innermost point 0 its travel, it will engage one of the toothed portions 73 of the car 72 and will thus impart, in this particu ar instance, a quarter revolution to thevertical shaft 48, in the direction of the arrow 0, thus causing one of the display frames to be brought mto the dis lay position and replace the one simullaneously moved away.
To insure the stability of the sup orting arms'bl, I have provided roller brac tets 77 on the'supportin arms 52 adjacent their outer ends, and w ose rollers 78 are adapted to bear a ainst the annular track 79 )rovided in t e upper surface of the base p ate 43 concentric with the shaft 48, so as to eti'ectively'sustain the supporting arms throughout their travel.
Thus far means for operating the rotary support and the display frames has been provided, and also means for lockin both of these at the roper intervals. have also" provided additional and even more effective locking means, whieh'are designed the previously described means to replace the same in case the concaved faces of the gears 63 and 73 should become worn so as to be inetiicient in operation. In each bearing head 53 of the supporting arms 52 I have provided adjacent the inner portion thereto a vertically extending recess 80 connnunicating with its under surface. The upper portion of each recess 80 is reduced, as at 81, for the reception of the reduced upper portion 82 of a vertically movable plunger 83 whose body portion 84 is received by the enlarged portion of the recess. This plunger is provided at its lower end with a depending locking pin 85 adapted to engage in either one of the recesses 86 and 87 provided in the upper face of the gear 63 on each of the said supporting arms 52. These recesses 86 and 87 are respectively located adjacent the concavcd faces 70 and 69 of the gear. The plunger 82 is adapted to, be maintained HOP mally in its lowermost position with the pin 85 in looking engagement with one of the recesses 86 or 87 in the gear 63. The pluner 83 has an inwardly extending tripping u 88 formed on its enlarged portion ant shdably movable within a vertical slot 85) forme in the inner face of the head 53 ot' the supporting arm in communication with the recess 80. This lug 88 is ada ted to be engaged by one of the inclined en 8 90 of an arcuate' tripping ridge 91 formed on the gear wheel 65 adjacent the toothed portion 66. As the wheel 65 rotates the lug 88 will ride up onto the upper surface 92 of the ridge and will thus be held out of locking engagement with the gear 63, thus permittin a semi-rotation L the same.
