Appiioanon mea my ai, 1912. riai No. 698,724.
To all whom z5-may concern:
Bc it known that I, JEFFERSON D. Arima, a citizen of the United States, residn at Rock Hall, in the county of Kent and t tate of B'Iaryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Flues; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to heaters, and it more particularly relates `to a heatincg drum andha damper or deflect/or connecte therewit 4An object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be built into a chimney-flue of Ordinary construction, und is adapted to utilize the heat which is ordinarily carried away with the roducts of combustion from a stove or the 1i e.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which "miv be easily and quickly applied-5to andav justed wit-hin aread -built chimney-flue.
A still further obJect of the inventionis.. associated with the druirf to provide means p whereby the products of combustion heate air or the like may be deflected or d flue.
the flow of heated matter throught e chimney-flue and drum, may be `operated byineans conveniently associated with the drum and damper. ,l
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter more clearl out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this app ication, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a chimney iverted. from the chimney-flue through saiddrum, whence it enters again yinto the cliiirmey-l A still further object is'bte provide means' whereby a damper or the like, for re ulating set forth 4and pointedy v im roved heating druml designate corresponding parte throughout the several views, the Wall of a cliiiiinevflue is designated by the numeral 5. The `stove 6, of ordinary construction, commuiii eates with the interior of the flue through the stove pipe 7, which extends into the flucopening 8, and the heated air and products of combustion from the stove 6, pass ilpward, as usual, and normally escape through the oiening 9, in the deiector plate 1U. This deflector plate is in the form of a nadrangular frame and has a de ending gauge 11, a vertical plate 12, and a orizontal base ange 32 said depending flange standinvr at an obtuse angle, and the vertical pllatc standin at an acute an le to the surface of said de ector plate. n other words, the flange 11 and plate 12 are arallel with each other and are dispose on vertical .plancsw liile the detlector plate is dis oscd on an inclined plane, as more clearly s own in Fig. 1. `Hinged to the deflector plate, at 13, is a damper 14,' provided with a segment ofa worm wheel 15, meshin with a worm 16. ,ivhicliis carried by a sha t 17, the latter vbeing jou'rnaled at 18 and 19, in the members 11 and 12 respe tively. The, shaft 17 carries a handle 20, by which it may be rotated for actuatin the worm and' segment of a worin wheel an thereby opening, closing and regulatin the dam er 14.
` In lorder t at the eflector plate and damper may be removed for cleaning or rep'airin or for cleaning out the chimney,
-anda terward properly adjusted therein, I
p referabl provide a sufficiently large aper- `ture in t e chimney, for the. insertion of a 'supporting frame 31, which is to be ixedly secured in said aperture. The base flange 32 is-seated upon the bottom plate of the frame 31, and the outer opening of this frame is closed by a closure or flanged platt- 33, the anges 34 thereof contacting with the inner surfaces of the frame 31. The closurtx 33 is provided with a stove pipe opening 35. through which the lmember 21 extends, so as 'to coact with the flange 32 in supporting the deflector plate in ro er position. Tlul member 21 is slidab e t rough the hole 35. while the plate 82 is slidable on the element 81, so that proper adjustment of these clements is easily obtainable.
The flange 12 is provided with a cylindrical stove pipe connection 21 which registers i with a. flue o ening or stove pipe hole 35, iu the closing p ate.
The heating drum same vwith` transverse radiator communicating with the flue open The connecting pipes 21..'and 21 ex through the ilue openin s 22 and 23, consti-` an outlet port, re-
tuting an inlet portan spectively, of the drum 24.

Copies' of this patentiinay' be obtained for vs exits 24 may be of any ordinary construction`,'but I Ihave shownthe-I pipes `T25.v` Formed onthebottomof the drum `isan elbow 26 whichyis extendedlaterally soas to communicate' withthe stove- )ipe'connection 21. An 'elbow 27 is'forme on theup per end of thedrum and extends laterally, ng 23. tend outwar operation of deflccting the heated matter 'through said -flue openings in an obvlous manner. When not desirable to heat the lroom .28, the handle 20 is turned so as to 'open the damper14, whereupon the heated "matter will follow the channel of least resistance, and will therefore pass straight upward through the opening 9 I do not limit m invention to the exaet details of construction and arrangement of arts herewith described and shown, but my invention is limited onl by a reasonable inyter retation of the fol owing claim.
hat I claim is:
Ay heated duid deflector comprising a frame adapted to be fitted into a flue having an opening through its wall, a damper pivotally mounted on the frame, and means for actuating the damper, the position of the frame being ad'ustable with relation to the opening throug the wall of the flue, so as to rovide Afor fitting the frame into fines of iferent sizes.
`In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
