En .STATES i GEORGE VW. HOWES, DOWJAGIALC, MICHGAN, ASSIGNOR TO BECKWITH COMPANY, F D OWAGIAC, MICHIGAN.
' FURNACE.
Application -Sled August 25 1922. Serial No. 584,232.
To all ywhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE 1V. HowEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dowagiac, county of Cass, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in furnaces.
My improvements are especially designed by me for use in connection with the type of furnace commonly designated as direct or Y from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is a front perspective view of a furnace embodying the features of my invention, lthe air heating chamber door being shown open, the combustion chamber and ashpit dampers and cleanout door being o en.
PFig. II is a detail vertical section illustrating structural details.
In the drawing similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout both views. y Y
Referring to the drawinfr, 1 represents the ashpit, 2 the combustion chamber and 3 the radiator of a furnace body. y
I provide a casing consisting of the front plate 4 provided with side flanges 5 and top flange 6. The casing 7 is a double casing,
referably such as shown in my Patent No. 1,369,434, dated Feb. 22, 1921. The front plate is provided with ashpit door 8, combustion chamber door 9 and the `cleanout door 10. The ashpit door is provided with a damper 11, while the combustion chamber door is provided with a damper 12.
The door 13 is hinged to one of the anges 5 to close against the other providing an air heating chamber embracing the front plate. A plate 14 is disposed across the top of the top flange and is provided with an air inlet opening 15 surrounded by the neck 16. The air inlet opening 15 may be provided with a suitable -air supply conduit as desired. In the embodiment illustrated a conduit 17 is connected tothe inlet 15 by the coupling box 16, the conduit leading from a floor register 17 so that it serves as a Ventilating and air circulating register for the room, conventionally illustrated. When the cleanout door 10 is opened it serves as a check for the furnace. Normally this is closed. The damper 12 is manipulated as may be desired, as is also the draft damper 11. With this arrangement of parts the air may be drawn from a register placed in the desired position to insure or aid circulation. This air is more or less heated by the radiation from the front plate of the furnace and may be delivered to the combustion chamber as pre-heated air through the'dampers 11 and 12, or when desired for circulation only, it may be delivered to the radiator of the furnace through the door 10. Another advantage is that the furnace may be placed in a basement and the radiation of heat therein minimized. This is desirable as in many instances it is desired to keep low temperatures in the basement or cellar for storage purposes.
Various parts of the furnace are shown in conventional form only as the details thereof form no part of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to sec-ure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination in a furnace, of a casing comprising a lianged front plate provided with ashpit and combustion chamber doors provided with dampers, a door hinged to one of said front plate flanges providing When closed an air chamber embracing the said doors, a top plate mounted on said front plate above said door and provided with an air inlet opening, and an air con duit connected to said inlet opening.
2. Ihe combination in a furnace, of a casing comprising a flanged front plate provided with ashpit and combustion Chamber doors provided With dempers, and a door hinged to one of said front plate flanges providing when closed an air chamber embracing the said doors, said chamber being pro-y vided With an air inlet opening.
3. The combination 1n a furnace, of :L easing comprising a recessed front plate,
a damper carried by said front plate, a door 10 for said front plate recess providing an air', chamber, a top plate provided with an air inlet opening, and an air conduit connectedto said inlet opening.
T In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set 15 my hand and seal.
GEORGE W. HGWES. [L su]
