UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MINNIE ETHEL PUNTENNEY, OF OKLAHOMA, OKLAHOMA.
TEAGHERS DESK.
Application filed February 7, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MINNIE ETHEL PUNTENNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oklahomacity, in the county of Oklahoma and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Teachers Desks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
An object of this invention is to combine a teachers desk, an organ, a globe, a footrest, and other. articles required in a modern school-room into one structure.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the ensuing description and pointed out in the appended claims.
In combining the articles named into one structure, the inventor has grouped them in an improved manner, by which the complete structure occupies no more room than an organ or teachers desk used separately.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved structure, With a number of doors thereof opened to expose interior construction. Fig. 2 is a view of the structure with the doors closed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4t is taken on the line H of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on still larger scale, taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the supporting arm for a teachers globe.
Referring to the several figures, in all of which like characters of reference designate like parts, the improved structure shown comprises, in part, a main casing 7, having the general form of a teachers desk. One side of the desk 7 is formed into a cabinet 8, the upper portion of which contains two slidable drawers 9 and the usual slidable book-rest or arm-plate 10. The space between this cabinet 8 and the left-hand side of the structure is occupied by an organ key-board 11, the space to the rear of this key-board being formed into a compartment 12 for the bellows 13 and other parts of an organ action. This bellows compartment 12 is provided with the usual front wall 14, which is set back'under the key-board 11 to form the usual recess 15 for pedals 16 and the feet and knees of the player. The front wall 14 is provided at its lower edge with Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 29', 1913.
Serial No. 607,060.
the usual forwardly-projecting pedal casing or housing 17 whose bottom portion 18 is level with the bottom of the general structure, the front or lower edgesoof the pedals 16 being hinged to the front edge of said bottom portion by hinges 19. Any approved operative connections are formed between the rear or free ends of the pedals 16 and the bellows 13. The key-board 11 is covered and protected by the usual hinged door 20, and in order to support this door in posit-ion to form a music-rack, a rest 21 is mounted on the upper wall 22 of the bellows and action compartment 12. In addition to its function as a support for the door 20, this rest forms a backing or support for books 23 which may be placed behind said door on the top 22 of the structure, said rest being supported by a foot-plate 2a which is slidable laterally of the structure over a slot or opening 25 formed in the said top 22 and running lengthwise thereof. A headed clamp-bolt 26 extends downward through the foot-plate 24, and through the slot or opening 25, said clamp-bolt being provided with a thumb-nut 27 adapted to engage with its upper threaded end portion by which the said foot-plate and its rest may be clamped at any suitable point along the slot or opening to support any number of books.
A call-bell 28 is mounted beneath the top 22 of the structure, the bell proper 29 thereof being screwthreaded to the lower end of a tubular bolt 30 which extends up through said top 22 and is held tightly therein by a screw nut 31. The usual belllever 82 is pivoted inside the bell 29 between pivotal lugs on the lower end of the tubular bolt 80, the longer arm of th1s belllever being provided with the usual clapperweight 33, while the shorter arm is acte upon by a stem 34: which extends down slidably through said bolt 30 and is provided on its upper end with the usual fingerbutton 35. The left-hand portion of the space in front of the wall 14: and below the key-board 11 is formed into a compartment 36 for a globe 37. This globe 37 is mounted on the free end of a pivoted arm 38 of rodiron, the axis 39 of said globe being secured to said arm by a friction-locked universal joint 40 to allow adjustment of said axis with the axis of the earth. The pivotal end of the arm 38 is formed integrally into a pivotal shaft 41, and this shaft is journaled in bearings 42 secured to the front edge of different positions on the casing to serve as the upper wall 43 of the globe compart ment 36.
The arm 38 is so shaped that when swung out of the globe compartment 36 and up into the operative position shown in Fig. 3 the port-ion d4 thereof adjacent its pivotal end leans against the upper edge of the frontboard 45 of the key-board 11, the remainder of said arm inclining upward and rearward so that its weight and that of the globe 37 maintain said arm in operative position. The pivotal shaft ll of the arm 38 is embraced by a helical spring 46, one of whose ends is secured to said shaft while its other end bears upward forcibly against the upper wall 4.3 of the globe compartment 36. The action of this spring 46 causes the arm 38 to swing upward into operative position immediately upon opening the door 47 of the globe compartment 36. The door 47 is swung to the side of the globe compartment 36 and is provided with a lock 49, so that it will remain closed against the action of the arm 38.
In order to form a footrest for the teacher, the housing 17 usually provided for the pedals 16 is provided with a permanentcover portion 51, so positioned that the feet of the player project under it in pedaling, and the opening left between the front edge of this cover portion 51 and the front edge of the bottom 18 of said housing is closed by a door 52 whose upper edge is pivoted to said cover portion 51 by hinges 53. This forms a better rest for the feet than would be afforded by the movable pedals 16.
The foregoing being a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A combined desk and organ action comprising, a casing, an organ action and keyboard contained in said casing, a lid hinged to the upper portion of the casing at the rear of said keyboard, a rest for said lid supported by the upper portion of the casing, said rest being slidable lengthwise of said casing, whereby it may be adjusted to different positions on the casing to serve as a backer or support for books thereon.
2. A combined desk and organ action comprising, a casing, an organ action and key board located within said casing, a lid hinged to the upper portion of the casing'at the rear of said key-board, a rest for said lid supported by the upper portion of the casing, said rest being slidable lengthwise of said casing, whereby it may be adjusted to a back or support for books thereon, and means passing through the upper portion of the casing for locking said rest against movement.
3. A combined desk and organ action comprising, a casing, an organ action and keyboard contained in said casing, a lid hinged to the upper portion of the casing at the rear of said key-board, a rest for said lid supported by the upper portion of the casing and slidable lengthwise of said casing, foot pedals pivoted at the lower portion of the casing, a housing for said foot-pedals formed within the casing, said housing having an upper outwardly extended portion, and a door hinged to the front edge of said upper portion and inclined downward and outward over the front ends of said foot-pedals.
4. A combined desk and organ action comprising, a casing, an organ action located within and supported by said casing, a compartment formed in one end of the casing, foot-pedals pivoted at the lower portion, a housing for said foot-pedals formed within the casing, said housing having an upper outwardly extended portion, and a door hinged to the front edge of said upper portion and inclined downward and outward "over the front ends of said foot-pedals.
5. A combined desk and organ action comprising, a casing, an organ action located within and supported by said casing, a housing for foot-pedals mounted within and supported by said casing, said housing comprising a top portion, and a bottom portion formed by the casing, and a door hmged to the front edge of the top portion and inclined to the front edge of the bottom por-v tion, said door and top portion of the housing serving as a rest for the feet of the teacher when the organ action is not in use.
6. A combined desk and organ action comprising, a casing, an organ action located within and supported by said casing, a lid hinged to the upper portion of the casing at the rear of the organ key-board, a rest for said lid supported on said casing, and means' passmg through the upper portion of said casing for adjusting the rest lengthwise and for locking the rest in adjusted position, said rest serving as a back or support for books on top of the casing.
