INVENTOR ATTORNEYS COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH C0., WASHINGTON. D c.

ENVELOP-MOISTENING DEVICE.
Application filed September 25, 1912.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 29, 1913.
Serial No. 722,230.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ESTHER on B. PETTL BONE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Butte, in the county of Silverbow and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelop-Moistening Devices, of which the .following is a specification.
This invention relates to an envelop moistening device, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a hand operated implement that can be easily and quickly manipulated for moistening the gummed or adhesive flap of an envelop.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of the above type embodying a reservoir, a moistening pad, and a novel valve for controlling the flow of the contents of the reservoir to the moistening pad.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the above type consisting of comparatively few parts that are inexpensive to manufacture, durable, easy to assemble, and highly eflicient for the purposes for which they are intended.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention resides in a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, partly broken away and partly in section. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line III-III of Fig. 1.
A device in accordance with this inven-' tion comprises a hollow cylindrical body 1 constituting a reservoir for water 2. One end of the body is closed, as at 3 and the opposite end thereof closed by a detachable cap or plug 4:.
The closed end of the body 1 is provided with a transverse opening 6 that extends through the closed end 3 of the body, and located within said opening is a spring pressed slide-valve 8 that has a port 9 adapted to register with longitudinally alining ports 10 formed in the closed end 3 of the body 1. The slide-valve 8 is slotted, as at 11 and 1s limited in its movement within the closed end of the body by a transversely arranged pin 12 that extends through the slot 11.
The body 1 is provided with a longitudinal enlargement 5 having a longitudinal slot 5 housing a flat spring 13, one end of said spring being secured to the enlargement, and the opposite end thereof bearing against the inner end of the slide-valve 8.
Communicating with one of the ports 10 is an outlet pipe 14 and the outer end of said pipe supports an angularly disposed moistening pad 15 that is made of felt or other absorbent material.
The closed end of the body 1 is provided with an off-set bracket or bearing 16 supporting a revoluble wheel or roller 17 that is located directly behind the moistening pad 15.
The gummed or adhesively coated flap of an envelop can be easily placed in engagement with the pad 15 and moistened. This can be accomplished by manipulating the envelop in one hand and the device in the other hand. Place envelop on desk or other fiat surface flap side upward,'insert moistening pad under gummed edge of flap, and holding envelop steady with left hand, push forward with right hand bearing with slight pressure on roller, thus the envelop is moistened and sealed with one and the same movement.
To supply the contents of the body 1 to the moistening pad 15, it is only necessary to press upon the outer end of the slide-valve 8, thereby placing the port-9 in alinementwith the ports 10, thereby allowing a sufficient quantity of the contents of the body 1 to flow through the outlet pipe 14 to the moistening pad 15.
' The periphery of the roller 17 or the entire roller can be made of a material not injurious to an envelop with which it contacts, and the remainder of this device can be made of light and durable material and of various sizes.
What I claim is An envelop moistening device comprising a cylindrical body constituting a reservoir and closed at each end, said body further having one end formed with recessed enlargement and a pair of ports, a spring mounted in said recess, a slide valve located in the pointed end of said body and adapted to establish communication between the ing the movement in either direction of said ports of the body, said spring normally valve. 10 maintaining said Valve in an inoperative In testimony whereof I aflix'my signature position, a vertically disposed outlet pipe in in presence'of tWo Witnesses.
communication With one of the parts of said ESTHER DE B. PETTIBONE. body, a moisteningpad carried by the outer Witnesses:
end of said outlet pipe and means carried OGLESBY YOUNG,
by the enlarged end of said body for limit- LENA AYREs.
