WILLIAM Gr. MAHAFFY, OF OKLAHOMA, OKLAHOMA.
CLOSURE FOR OIL-CANS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 29, 1913.
Application filed Ju1yv29, 1912. Serial No. 711,958.
To all whom l? may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. MAHAFFY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oklahoma city, in the county of Oklahoma and State o-f Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Olosures for Oil-Cans, of which the following is a speciication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to closures for receptacles, and particularly to cans for li uids.
t is an object of the invention to open and close the outlet opening of the can.
The sheet of drawings accompanying and forming a part of this specification shows several views of a structure for attaining the above and such other objects of the invention as will become apparent from the ensuing description.
In the drawings z-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of an oil can, with the improved closure in use thereon. Fig. 2 is a view in the same direction as Fig. 1, showing the improved parts of the closure, with a portion broken away. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmental elevation view of the can, showing the closure in section.
Similar characters of reference indicate similar parts in the different views.
In attaining the objects of the invention, the improved closure comprises, in part, an elongated blank of sheet metal, shaped to form the lower wall 11 of a gateway 5, and a second blank of sheet metal shaped to form the upper wall 6 of said gate-way, the edges of the upper blank being flanged downward, as at 7, past the edges of the lower wall and being soldered securely thereto to complete an end and side walls of said gate-way. These walls 4 and 6 of the gate-way 5 are provided with openings 8 and 9, adapted to register with an opening 10 in the top 11 of the can, and said lower wall is then securely soldered to said top 11 as shown. The spout 12 of the can is then soldered in place on the upper wall 6, over the opening 9 therein. In further arrangement, a sheet-metal gate 13 is provided, and adapted to slide in the gate-way 5 tov cut 0H passage through the openings 8 and 9. A portion of the forward or closing end of the gate 13 is bent back upon said end to form a resilient tongue 14, this tongue frictionally engaging the upper wall 6 of the gate-way 5 and causing the main or remaining portion of the gate to likewise engage the lower wall 4 to yieldingly hold said gate against movement. The central portion 15 of the tongue 14C is conveXed upward to bear against the upper wall 6 of the gateway 5 directly over the opening 8, the free end of said tongue resting upon the gate at a point equidistant from said opening with respect to the stationary end of said tongue, and thereby causing equal seating pressure of the gate around said opening. The outer end of the gate 13 is flanged upward to form a nger-hold 17 for moving it, and the upper and lower walls 6 and 4 are provided with similar finger-holds 18 and 19, either of which may be gripped in connection with the finger-hold 17 as a finger purchase in opening or closing the gate.
It will now be seen that there is provided a gate adapted to cut off passage of the oil outward; that improved means are provided for holding the gate in open or closed position; that said means act to insure tight seating of the gate over the outlet openings; that stops are provided to limit the opening and closing movements of the gate; and that said stops are adapted to act as finger purchases for producing the movements of said gate.
I-Iaving thus described the invention, I claim A closure consisting of a framing forming an elongated gate-way and having openings adapted to register with an opening in a can, said framing having side walls and an end wall adapted to be afliXed to the body of said can, a stop formed on said gate-way, an elongated sheet-metal gate mounted to slide in said gate-way and adapted to be limited in its movements by said stop and said end wall, the forward end of said gate being bent backward upon the remaining portion to form a resilient tongue, the central portion of said tongue being convexed to bear against the inner` surface of the gateWay, Witness my hand this 20 day of July,
the free end of the tongue being shaped to nineteen hundred and twelve (1912).
