l HELGA M. PETERSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FIQF;
i DEVICE FOR DECORATING CHINAWARE.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HELGA M. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Devices for Decorating Chinaware, of which the following is a full, clear,-concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to devices for decorating chinaware and has for its object the provision of a device which is readily ad* justable for use in r,decorating china articles of any size or conformation and one which may be economically manufactured.
While the pen which I prefer touse with my device is of a particular construction, the ordinary ruling pens may be used with my device if desired.
My invention will be more clearly understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my device; Fig. 2 is a top view thereof; Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 2)*3 of Fig. l; Fig. 4: is an elevational view of the pen which I prefer to use with my device; Fig. 5 is an elevational view of a modified form of the adjustable arm; and Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to Fig. 1, a rod or beam is indicated at 7. This rod has a split end indicated at 8 which is adapted to be spread and closed by means of a .suitable thumb screw 9. The end of the rod 7 is conformed to receive a suitable ruling pen l0. The opening 11 which is provided to receive the pen l0 may be of the shape shown in Fig. 2, or it may have a rectangular shape as indicated in dotted lines. The rod 7 is provided with a suit-able arm l2 disposed Specication of Letters Patent.

with which the device is to be used. I prefer to have the arm of square cross-section in order that the portion of the arm which engages the china article may be as small as possible. In the drawings the arm 12 is shown mounted upon the beam with the notches on the side away from the marking tool. It is apparent, however, that the notches may be brought into use by reversing the arm relatively to the beam. The rod 7 is marked off into feet and inches to facilitate adjustment of the arm. The rod 7 may be provided with an auxiliary opening 11, if desired.
Referring now to Fig. 4, the preferred form of ruling pen is shown. The front finger 15 ofthe ruling pen is preferably narrower than the rear finger 16 in order that it may be adjustable when the rear finger 16 is clamped within the split end of the rod 7.
In the modifica-tion shown in Fig. 5 the arm 12 may be provided with an adjustable notched block 17, if desired. This block is retained at the desired position by means of a suitable thumb-screw 18. Vhen this arrangement is used, the position of the notch may be adjusted to suit any requirements.
In using the device it is placed with one of the edges of the arm 12 resting against the edge of the article to be decorated and then moved along the article, the pen being drawn over the surface of the article to mark thereon the desired line. Of course, the posit-ion of the arm relatively to the rod 7 isd carefully adjusted before the device is use lVhile I have illust-rated my device in the particular embodiments herein shown a-nd described, I do not, however, limit myself to these exact constructions but desire to claim any equivalents that may suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
l/Vhat I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, a beam having linear graduations thereon, an arm disposed at right angles to said beam, said beam having a split end, and a pen adjustably retained in said split end, said pen having one finger narrower than the other finger so that the narrow finger is adjustable relatively to the other finger when the said other finger is retained in the split end of the beam, said arm having a notch on the one side thereof, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, a
beam, an arm disposed at right ongles to said beam with the notches facing the mark- I said beam and adjustably mounted thereon, ing tool. lo said beam being provided on one end thereof In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe with means for carrying a suitable marking my name this 26th day of June, A. D. 1912.
